Onyx BOOX Tab Ultra C 10.3-inch color E-Ink Android tablet comes with stylus support

Onyx BOOX Tab Ultra C is an Android 11 tablet with a 10.3-inch E-Ink Kaleido 3 color display with 2480 x 1860 black & white resolution, 1240 x 930 color resolution, a capacitive touchscreen and support for a stylus with 4096 levels of pressure.

The tablet is an evolution of the BOOX Tab Ultra black-and-white tablet with a 4096-color E-Ink display using the latest Kaleido 3 screen that increases color saturation by 30 percent and reduces blue light reflections compared to earlier Kaleido Plus displays.

The BOOX Tab Ultra C ships with the BOOX Pen2 Pro (Black) stylus, a USB Type-C cable, a card tray eject tool, a Quick Start Guide, and a warranty sheet. We’re told the tablet supports third-party apps, so I suppose that means Google Play might be pre-installed, unless they expect people to sideload apps.

We are not told anything about refresh rates. I’ve included the unboxing video below to have a better look at the ports and hardware features, but the company has uploaded a few very short videos showing the device in action, I’d just wish there were a few more, for example, to show features such as document scanning with the built-in camera.

We’ve covered 10.3-inch e-paper tablets in the past including the KloudNote e-Reader and the PineNote devkit, but those were all with a black & white display and the BOOX Tab Ultra C is the first 10.3-inch tablet I’ve seen with a color e-Ink display. The price of such hardware is still pretty expensive with Onyx selling the BOOX Tab Ultra C for $599.99.

  1. Given the price of similarly spec’d hardware, along with the fact that this is a color version, it’s not too expensive per se. Hopefully devices of this kind will get cheaper in the future.

    1. Just be aware that the refresh rate of colour e-ink displays are seconds. I walked through their booth at the Tocuch Taiwan trade show and although some of the colour e-ink displays look alright, they’re far from LCD displays in terms of colour quality and as mentioned, the refresh rate is abyssmal.

      1. Yes of course. I am fully aware. It’s reading that is their strong point. But then again I guess many people mainly consume video content these days, so it might never gain traction as a general purpose device.
