but if you don’t feel comfortable open the device and soldering a few wires, Gisund WP3/WP5 smart plug should work with tuya-convert to let you upgrade the firmware without even opening the device. [Update: Sorry, this won’t work at this time, since the firmware has been updated to close the loophole. See comments]

  1. amazon.de also has discounts on gosund plugs. E.g. a set of 4 goes from eur 34 to eur 26 with voucher.

  2. I’ve been meaning to try something like this for a long time. This was enought to get me to try it. Let’s see if I can find as many things to do with them as I had though. 🙂 Thank you, Jean-Luc.

  3. In for four! I’ve been needing some (wore one up power cycle testing an embedded linux box), and the price is in my target range. Looks like it’d be kinda tricky to open it up, but the OTA hack to switch to open source looks promising.

    1. Mine arrived. The firmware is too new for the OTA hack to work. It relied on a bug and Tuya has fixed the bug.

      1. I think I’m in the same boat–or I did the hack wrong. I didn’t use an Rpi, but a docker container on an F32 box. I was never able to connect to the temporary AP because there didn’t seem to be any dhcp server. So, it could be pilot error. I’m curious what @Joe Bleau finds out.

The script did say that “An ESP82xx based device connected accordign to your wifi log.” but I don’t see anything in the logs that would show that. The logs contain almost nothing.

        1. I’ve tried two, and both are too new (ID: 02). I did not get any ESP82xx message…where/when did that appear? If I know it’s an ‘8266, I’m willing to pop it open. But if I know it’s not, I’ll try and return to AMZN.

        2. I’ve now tried all 4 (too late to edit my other comment). No ESP82xx messages, that I can see (I used an r-pi4). But I did pull the OUI for each: c4:dd:57, 24:a1:60, and 70:03:9f. All lookup as Espressif Inc. But the ID for all 4 starts with 02, so no OTA update.

          1. I think it was an artifact of the way I was using Docker on a F32 machine to run tuya. I configured an Rpi3+ with a fresh install and it failed with a PSK error. So, I have no evidence they’re ESP based. Unless they’re easy to open, I’m sending mine back. I don’t want to destroy them to reprogram them. I’m okay with flashing them on the board as long as I can get to the board readily. Please share what you find out.

  4. Its a huge gamble.

The glory days of tuya convert are over. Most of the tuya devices switched to a new tuya module that has a pin compatible microcontroler that is not esp8266
