Arduino Education Unveils Four New STEAM Kits for Pupils and Students

We briefly mentioned the Bett Show 2020 in an article about a Snapdragon 7c laptop for education that Microsoft will showcase at the event, but Arduino Education is also present and introduced four new educational kits for pupils and students at different stages of their curriculum.

Education Starter Kit – Age: 11+

This kit is for secondary school pupils with no prior experience with electronics or programming. It comes with Arduino boards, breadboard, a multimeter, and other accessories to get started. The kit also includes teacher guides and lessons to wire projects and start programming.

IoT Starter Kit – Age: 14+

The IoT starter kit (no photo provided) requires some basic knowledge and targets advanced secondary school and university students who want to learn about the Internet of Things with the kits including various sensors and step-by-step tutorials for ten different projects to help students get introduced to automation, logging, graphing and analyzing sensor data, and triggering events.

CTC GO! Motions Expansion Pack – Age: 14+

Arduino CTC GO Motions Expansion PackThis expansion pack is designed for the existing CTC GO! – Core Module for up to 24 students, and targets students who already went through some of the 20 online learning sessions.  They can learn more advanced programming concepts as well as the basics of motors and transmission mechanisms. Educators will get training including webinars, videos, guides, and direct contact with an expert.

Engineering Kit Rev2 – Age: 17+

Arduino Engineering Kit Rev2 is an update to the kit shown above meant to be used by high school and university students over 17 years old.

Arduino did not provide a photo for the new kit, but explains it “is a practical, hands-on tool that demonstrates key concepts, core aspects of mechatronics, and MATLAB and Simulink programming”. Arduino joined MathWorks to developed the kit that will include three projects to teach the basics of engineering.

None of the new Arduino STEAM kits appear to be available right now, some are listed on resellers website but with no price. There’s some code on Arduino Github for the CTC GO! Motions Expansion pack.

  1. There is a big problem with the engineering kit that uses Matlab: After the 1-year license is expired you will have to pay over $400 to get your own version of Matlab that has all the required packages needed for the kit. That is more money than the actual kit costs. This is what happens when an open-source driven company pairs up with a closed-source company. It is too bad, because that kit is a lot of fun 🙁

  2. For the love of God. Can we please stop calling it STEAM. That literally goes against the exact point of STEM.

    1. ROFL well I don’t know that it ‘literally’ goes against the point. Both platforms get kids interested in computers… STEAM gets them interested in a mostly-closed content-consumer platform, and STEM gets them interested in an open learning platform. I think their goals are actually complementary, not opposite.

Anyhow, I’ll bet that this is just a matter of autoincorrect in action.
