We’re already seen there’s an active maker community in South East Asia with products such as KidBright32 educational board in Thailand, and Singapore & Thailand based MakerAsia’s recent launch of the open-source KB-IDE for ESP32 targets.
Vietnam based Clover Team also introduced a STEM platform for students late last year with hardware, an IDE, and a mobile application.
The team has made three educational kits:
- Clover EDU Basic with Clover Master Board and basic modules
- Clover Car Robot with Clover Master Board, motor, motor driver module, line sensor, distance sensor, Bluetooth module
- Clover Inventor that includes all items from Clover EDU Basic and Clover Car Robot plus a WiFi module.
The Master board is compatible with the Arduino UNO platform (software-wise) and comes with the following key features:
- Connectivity – Header for ESP8266 WiFi module
- Expansion – 4x RJ11 ports for input and output with color signs, and compatible with all modules with are also color-coded to make sure students select the right interface
- Misc – 1x Red LED, 1x Button, 1x Buzzer, 1x IR Receive and 4 ports to connect with expansion modules.
There’s also a fairly long list of modules:
- Inputs – Button, Touch button, IR receiver, potentiometer
- Indicators – Red LED, Green LED, Blue LED, RGB LED
- Displays – 4-digit 7-segment LED display, LED Bar with 12 levels, Matrix LED (8×16)
- Sensors – Distance sensor, temperature & humidity sensor, light sensor, soil moisture sensor, gas sensor, line sensor for line follower robot
- Connectivity – Bluetooth Module, Wifi Module
- Motor module to create Car Robot
The CloverBlock IDE is said to support drop and drag code, but advanced students can also program the master board using Arduino code. English and Vietnam languages are supported in the IDE that appears to be available for Windows only.
Several demo projects are also provided to students including a line following robot, an auto avoid barrier robot, robot control through a smartphone app (over Bluetooth), sensor data demo, an automatic watering system, and so on.
The prices of the three kit are currently as follows:
- Clover EDU Starter – 990,000VND ($42.6 US)
- Clover Car Robot – 466,000 to 2,000,000VND ($20 US to $86 US)
- Clover Inventor – 2.499,000 VND ($107 US )
The project is exclusively for the Vietnamese market now, since most resources are written in Vietnamese. You’ll find all the details on the project’s website.
