Intel adds Three 7W Amber Lake-Y Processors

Intel announced their Amber Lake family of low power high performance processors, officially known as Intel Core Y-Series processor last year with three SKUs: Core m3-8100Y, Core i5-8200Y, Core i7-8500Y which are all dual core/quad thread processor offering different base and boost CPU frequencies, and sporting the same UHD 615 graphics.

As I browsed Intel’s Ark “previously Amber Lake Y”  page this morning, I found out the company added three more processors to the family in Q1 2019.

The new processors also come with two cores and four thread, but at higher frequency, and TDP is fixed to 7W, while the first three model at a 5W TDP configurable up to 7 or 8 Watts or down to 3.5 or 4.5 Watts.

They are also equipped with Intel UHD Graphics 617 graphics that appears to only offer a higher boost frequency to 1.05 GHz instead of 900/950 MHz for UHD 615 graphics.

Main differences between the three new models:

  • Core i5-8210Y clocked at 1.60 GHz (base), 3.90 3.60 GHz (turbo)
  • Core i5-8310Y clocked at 1.60 GHz (base), 3.90 GHz (turbo)
  • Core i7-8510Y clocked at 1.80 GHz (base), 3.90 GHz (turbo)

There’s absolutely no difference between Core i5-8210Y and i5-8310Y in Ark website, except the former comes with “4MB smartcache” instead of just “4MB cache” for the latter, whatever that means.

While Core i5-8210Y is shown as being launched in Q1 2019, it’s found in Apple MacBook Air (2018) announced at the end of last year, and Core i7-8510Y processor has been spotted in GeekBench in a platform codenamed “AAPJ140K1” which may be another upcoming MacBook Air model. There are been very few Amber Lake mini PCs announced, because Amber Lake-Y processors are quite expensive, and this form factor does not really take full advantage of the lower power consumption like a battery powered laptop does.

  1. Amazingly expensive. None of these CPU’s is going to sell well because they’re aimed at only very high priced low end devices. If Intel does not want to give a real cherry trail successor because they only want to focus on profit, they are absolutely a no-no for buying at low TDP devices, as simple as that.

When AMD releases their cherry trail direct competitor it’s a bye bye to Intel for good. Although they may or may not release them, but I hope they will, because the 2-4W market is very lacky on everything, and with 7nm and 4W you can do wonders.

    1. All a AMD off shoot would need to do is a design a high ability low W TDP GPU and PCIE with Linux and Android drivers combined with arm CPU . Just like a Nvidia Shield TV or even go the Chromebook route Once use to low W arm CPU design they could design their own with added AMD IP, just like Apple etc
