Nintendo started to offer smaller replica of their older popular games consoles with Nintendo NES Classic Edition in 2016, followed by Nintendo SNES Classic Edition in 2017. Both devices came with recent interfaces like HDMI, a limited (and fixed) number of games, but being powered by Allwinner R16 SoC they soon became hackable.
Both game consoles also became very popular selling in millions despite the underwhelming hardware, and limited games. Another company that has been doing game console for many year is Sony, and they must have liked Nintendo’s idea and sales numbers, as they’ve just unveiled Sony PlayStation Classic, a smaller replica of the original PlayStation with a limited number of games, and modern interfaces such as HDMI and USB…
Sony PlayStation Classic specifications have not been fully disclosed but we can see two USB ports for the game controllers, an HDMI output port, and power, open, and reset button on top of the console. Despite the Open button, there’s no “mini CD drive” it’s just for esthetics and match the original PlayStation design. There’s also a “virtual memory card” to save game progress. We’ll have to wait and see to find out if Sony also went with an Allwinner processor.
You can’t just load games however, and instead the console comes with 20 pre-loaded games including Final Fantasy VII, TEKKEN 3, R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, Jumping Flash!, Wild Arms, and more to be announced…
The console will ship with two USB game controllers, an HDMI cable, but no power supply, as instead the company asks their customers to select a standard 5V/1A or greater for the console.
Sony is starting to accept pre-order for $99.99, and shipping is scheduled to start on December 3, 2018. Currently three US stores are accepting pre-orders with BestBuy, Walmart, and GameStop, while Amazon allows customers to register their interest. More details can be found in the product page.

… a simple Android TVBox with s905x, an updated CoreElec release with Kodi Leia 18 beta, and you’ll have entire 80’s console emulation (even PS1) for around 30 bucks …. and you’ll not need roms, with “Internet Archive ROM Launcher” plugin !!!! 🙂
Absolutely ! I just wish CoreElec 8.95.2+ could expand their opkg package manager to beyond Entware repo, or maybe the read-only OS is a limitation beyond symlinking /opt installs to writeable/system/.opt ? My Pi-hole install attempts failed, maybe the install script need be modified.
Unluckily the writeable (?) OSMC JeOS only works with a single expensive machine promoted by the author Sam Nazko.
In any case CoreElec beats LibreElec for generic S905s with more tailoring and opkg beyond add-ons and Debian bloated Docker installation.
