$10 Nordic Semi nRF52840 USB Dongle Supports Bluetooth 5, Thread, ZigBee, 802.15.4, ANT and 2.4GHz Proprietary

Several weeks ago, as I noticed the lack of Bluetooth 5 USB dongles, I found MakerSpot CC2640 Bluetooth 5 USB stick based on Texas Instrument CC2640R2F Arm Cortex-M3 WiSoC. It’s not exactly a consumer products, and instead it’s more like a development kit, but it can still be inserted into the USB port of your computer or development board.

Today, I found out Nordic Semi also made their own Bluetooth 5  – or is it Bluetooth 5.0 now, I’m really confused at this point – USB dongle for evaluation & development based on nRF52840 WiSoC. It’s not only for Bluetooth 5 though, as the multi-protocol SoC also supports Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth Mesh, Thread, Zigbee, 802.15.4, ANT(+), and 2.4 GHz proprietary solutions.

The dongle won’t break the bank, as it is sold for just $10 on Mouser and other distributors. The product page may have a little more information.

If you’d rather get something that you can purchase in quantities, with all certifications, and/or an enclosure, Fanstel is offering their USB840T Bluetooth 5 USB stick – based on the company’s nRF52840 module – for $15. That’s only the PCBA version for now, and the enclosure will become available in August 2018.

  1. Whats does 2.4 GHz proprietary actually include?, can it then also do 2.4GHz wifi, of just pear to pear between nordic devices?

    1. nRF52840 can’t do WiFi, the radio does not support it. I think the proprietary 2.4 GHz thing can be used in devices like RF remote controls or game pads.

    2. Proprietary in this sense means any low power 2.4GHz protocol that isn’t a standard. Think wireless keyboard/mice, some kind of RF remote control, a proprietary IoT mesh solution etc. In other words, if you want to make a 2.4GHz protocol for some silly reason, you could do it using this. Me, I prefer standards and think all these silly proprietary things are just stupid, but then again, I’m not a financial guy, I just like products that are interoperable.

  2. Mouser: 10 USD for the device, … plus 20 Euro shipping … 🙁
