I keep reading that in order to offer a pleasant user experience, virtual reality will require high resolution displays (4K or greater), and SoCs fast enough to handle all the extra data processing requirements, but some Chinese manufacturers are instead trying to enter the low end of the market with products such as Allwinner H8vr or HA544 which are way too weak to handle 3D graphics for VR applications in a satisfying manner, but could be good enough for watching 3D and VR video. Looks like a total waste of money to me. VR displays need to be at least 1080p quality or it’s just going to be horrible to watch using it. I tried on low resolutions with VR lenses (big display 720p) and could clearly see the lack of pixels. With that said I would say the refresh rate is what is important, as you will get nauseated when the brain reacts to what is happening on the screen.
For a cheap VR experience we should probably stick with phones as they have gyroscopes too, but should be easy to do in a kit like this. It would be a 1080p screen with minimum 60 Hz playing back 60fps and it could be useable for watching/playing VR games for short periods of time. Preferably would be a solution where we could plug the screen to our computer GPU/CPU so that could take care of the processing. Like a screen with displayport input? Not doable? I guess I’m just a dreamer when it comes to the niche of VR.
Oculus dk1 was 720p and definitely eye cancer inducing
720P screen and 1G RAM in the all-in-one VR? it’s a joke.
