Rocketbook Takes Your Written Notes to the Cloud, Erases in Your Microwave Oven (Crowdfunding)

Maybe I’m old style, but I still prefer taking notes with pen and paper rather than typing on a computer. That means I need to buy some notebooks (the ones made of paper) from time to time, and once they are full I store them away. But now you can combine the good old written notes with the cloud thanks to RocketBook, a standard looking notebook combined with a mobile app that will scan your notes and send them to various cloud services, and more amazingly it’s re-usable since you can erase by putting in 30 seconds your microwave.

RocketbookI was perplexed at first, as it looked like a scam to me. But finally, I’m pretty sure it’s not since it’s using existing technology, namely Pilot Frixion pens. They looks like standard ball-point pens, but they use a “thermo-sensitive gel ink formula” that can be erased with friction, and they are not terribly expensive since a box of 12 sells for $23 on Amazon.

What about the notebook itself? It looks quite standard, except you’ll notice 7 icons on the bottom of each page that are used to send notes scanned with Rocketbook app to specific services like Evernote, Dropbox,  Google Docs, etc.. or folders with a cloud service. So if you don’t care about automatic sorting it’s actually something you could do yourself with a standard notebook, your mobile phone with automatic picture uploads to Dropbox. However, I am not sure all types of paper may be suitable for the microwave erase method, and some people recommend using Foliax Cotton Cream paper with Frixion pen. Rocketbook app is available for iOS only, but an Android app is in the works.

The video below makes it quite clear how this all works.

Rocketbook has recently been launched on Indiegogo, and already reached its $20,000 funding target.  A $25 pledge should get your a 11″ x 8 1/2″ (27.94 x 21.59cm) Rocketbook with 100 pages (50 sheets) and a Frixion black pen. You can get a discount per unit by going with 2 or 3 notebook rewards. Shipping is free to the US, but $15 to the rest of the world, and delivery is scheduled for July 2015.

Thanks to CSilie for the tip.
