QNAP TS-x51 NAS Supports Up to 16 Drives, On-the fly HD Video Transcoding, HDMI Output, Virtualization and More

QNAP has introduced their latest TS-x51 NAS family at Computex 2014 with four NAS supporting between 2 to 8 drives, expandable to a total of 16 drives via expansion enclosures. The storage devices powered by an Intel Celeron J1800 dual core processor boast video transcoding capability that’s 18 times faster than earlier Atom based solutions, feature an HDMI port, and support virtualization to allow you to run two operating systems such as Linux and Windows 8.

As mentioned in the introduction, virtualization is also supported, but you’ll be limited to one running virtual machine using 2 GB RAM. Each device features between to 2 to 8-bay for hard drives, but you can add 5 or 8 bays using UX-500P or UX800-P RAID expansion enclosures pictured below. Using 6TB hard drives, you can achieve up to 96TB storage with 8 drives in TS-851 and 8 drives in UX-800P. Up to 4096 users, and 600 concurrent connections can be handled by TS-x51 NAS.

The company also released some performance and power consumption charts for their devices showing they can deliver up to 224 MB/s throughput using both Ethernet ports, and consume much less power than PCs or older Atom based NAS.

On the fly video transcoding is also possible with QNAP TS-x51 NAS with performance 18 times faster than Atom based solution such as QNAP TS-469 Pro. Transcoding will be dynamic and automatically adjust the video resolution/bitrate to the network used (e.g. 1080p for Ethernet, 480p for Wi-Fi and LTE, abnd 240p for 3G) to avoid buffering and provide the best user experience possible.

The Linux based operating systems on QNAP NAS is called QTS, currently at version 4.1. It provides a desktop environment, allows you to manage storage devices, users & groups privileges, network settings, manage files, create your own cloud server using myQNAPcloud, schedule downloads (e.g. using BitTorrent), synchronize files between devices and cloud storage services (Google Drive, Dropbox…), and more. It can also be used as an home media center with XBMC and Plex Media Server, support for Airplay, DLNA, and an optional MCE remote control (RM-IR002). Other applications included digital signage using iArtisit Lite to create content, surveillance station with 2 cameras supported by default and up to 24 surveillance cameras can be supported by purchasing an optional license. More apps are available via an App Center. These apps are created by third parties using the company’s third party development platform called QDK (QNAP development kit?).

The company did not disclose pricing nor availability information, although accessories are already available for sale on QNAP Store, for example for QNAP TS-851. There’s no product page just yet, but you can find lots of details on QNAP TS-x51 product brief.
