As I wrote a list of the Top 10 ARM Linux development boards, I discovered that Origen 4 Quad development board based on Exynos 4412 quad core Cortex A9 processor is currently in development and will replace the Origen board (Samsung Exynos 4212). This board appears to be similar to Hardkernel ODroid-X board, but pricing won’t be as aggressive as it will sell for $199 (vs $129 for the ODroid-X) in the base configuration.
Here are the specifications for the base version (ORIGEN 4 Quad Package-C):
- CPU Board
- CPU : Samsung Exynos 4 Quad Cortex-A9 core 1.4 GHz
- DRAM : 1 GB (POP Type)
- PMIC : S5M8767A
- Base Board
- HDMI support
- Ethernet (10/100 Mbps),
- SDcard
- 2x USB 2.0 Host, 1x USB 2.0 Device
- Serial, JTAG
- Connector support (Sub Boards)
- External I/F
- MIPI CSI/DSI , Parallel, C2C
- Sub Boards
- Sound Board: Realtek : ALC-5631Q-A
ORIGEN 4 Quad Package-B is based on Package-C, but replaces the Realtek based sound board by Asahi KASEI AK4678 based sound board, and adds a connectivity board based on MediaTeK MT6620 (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GNSS and FM). It costs $299.
ORIGEN 4 Quad Package-A is based on Package-B, and adds the following:
- LCD & Touch Package:
- 7″ LCD (1024 x 600)
- 7″ Capacitive sensing Touch screen
- Connector module for LCD & Touch
- Accessories Package:
- AC Adapter(5V 2~3A)
- SD Card (4G Bytes)
- HDMI, Serial, USB Cable
The full package will go for $469.
Accessories, LCD & touch package, camera, sensor, sound and connectivity boards are also sold separately.
The software is said to include U-boot 1.3.4 , kernel 3.0.15 and Android 4.0.4. Linaro Android and Ubuntu might also be supported, if Origen 4 Quad becomes a Linaro development platform, just like the Origen is.
InSignal, the Korean company developing Origen board, has done some commits in their git repository to support Exynos 4412 in the Linux kernel. For those having the skills and the time, I could be interesting to compare the kernel source in Hardkernel tree with Insignal’s.
I could not find a press release about this board, so the information above might change when the board is officially announced, which should be later this month, if we are to believe the announcement made in February:
“THE ORIGEN 4 Quad” will be ready in August
“The ORIGEN 4 Dual was Sold Out”

Stumbled across a MTK6577 (=dual core MTK6575) PCBA here:

I guess the MTK6588 on the manfacturer’s site is quad core? See

(They also have an Exynos one, but it looks like 3110 is single core…)
@Onebir
hmm interesting, and MTK6588 will apparently be a quad core Cortex A7…
