e-con Systems, an embedded design services company specializing in the development of camera solutions, has just announced the launch of e-CAM51_USB USB Camera comprised of a 5-megapixel Autofocus Camera Module (e-CAM52_5640_MOD) based on OmniVision OV5640 CMOS image sensor. This camera module targets document camera visualizers, interactive teaching & meeting solutions, OCR, scientific research, telemedicine/health, biometrics and robotics applications.
The e-CAM51_USB camera module supports GPIO and microphone with an integrated analog-to-digital converter (ADC). It does not require specific drivers since it is compliant with USB Video Class (UVC) and USB Audio Class (UAC).
OmniVision OV5640 CameraChip sensor features automatic image control functions such as:
- Automatic exposure control (AEC)
- Automatic white balance (AWB)
- Automatic band filter (ABF)
- 50/60Hz automatic luminance detection
- Automatic black level calibration (ABLC)
Most of these features are supported via the standard UVC protocol providing good applications interoperability on Linux and Windows. Some e-CAM51_USB features such as GPIO control, Auto and manual focus control, are supported through UVC Extension Unit interface.
Here are the USB camera module key features:
- e-CAM52_5640_MOD 5.0 MP auto focus camera module
- Plug-and-Play setup in Windows and Linux
- Built-in microphone with 16 bit PCM support
- 4 general purpose pins
- Two user configurable GPIOs (one input and one output)
- Predefined GPIO input for still image capture
- Predefined GPIO input for flip/mirror
- Up to 30 fps for VGA
- Temperature range: 0° to +50°C stable image
- Operating voltage: 5V ± 250mV
- Power requirements: 400 mA (max)
- Supports Windows 7, Windows XP, Linux (In development)
- Dimensions : 71mm x 13mm x 7.8mm
You can watch the video below to see the device capabilities with e-CAMView, a Windows sample application for Video Preview and Still Capture.
The company said samples will be available in mid-June 2012. You can get further details on e-CAM51_USB page.

Hi, the link to the product page is broken (missing http:// makes it internal)
@ Alejandro M.
Thx. I should be OK now.
They now have the same type of camera module for Wandboard and SabreLite (i.mx6).
