Ali M3701G: New MIPS based STB SoC

Ali, a Taiwan company, manufacturer of chips for multimedia devices such as DVD player , Set-top boxes, media player has recently announced a new chipset for DVB STB based on MIPS architecture called the M3701G.

Here’s an excerpt of MIPS press release (25/04/2011) for this system on chip:

MIPS Technologies, Inc.announced today that Taiwan’s ALi Corporation based its new system-on-chip (SoC), which is targeted for the emerging “triple play” market, on the popular MIPS32® 24KEfTM core. MIPS32 24K® cores are widely used across the globe in digital home and networking products including broadband access devices, digital televisions, set-top boxes, and digital media players.

With a hybrid design for DVB-C HD / DVB+IP dual-mode operation, the new M3701G chipset from ALi is targeted for products that support triple play services, such as the next generation of networked media players and set-top boxes.

The M3701G chipset is available now from ALi. It includes support for MPEG-2/4, H.264, AVS (Audio Video Standard), VC-1 and VP8 decoder. It also includes a high-performance graphics acceleration Open VG v1.1 engine. It features built-in QAM, Ethernet MAC, three USB ports, HDMI, a double-tuner; and more.

Ali actually showcased its new M3701G DVB-C HD solution at China Content Broadcasting Network (CCBN 2011) exhibition on the 23-25 March 2011 in Beijing.

Ali does not currently have any information on their English website about M3701G, but in the Chinese version of they provide some further information:

M3701G – High Definition,  open architecture, triple play solutions supporting  DVB-C
ALi M3701G is a triple play-oriented, using open architecture with support for DVB + IP dual-mode, DVB-C high-definition (HD) system-on-chip solutions for multi-mode, multimedia integration. M3701G is based on a 32-bit dual-core CPU, single core @ 400MHz with one core supporting floating-point operations that can be used for value-added services, greatly improving the speed and processing performance. M3701G is an open architecture that supports Linux, can decode MPEG -2/4/ h.264 / AVS / VC-1 / VP8 in High Definition, features high-performance graphics acceleration based on Open VG v1.1 engine, built-in QAM, Ethernet MAC, three USB ports, HDMI, dual OSD menu.

M3701G is said to support both Linux and Android operating systems.

During CCBN 2011, they also announced two lower cost standard definition chipsets M3202G and M3202C.
