AI in a box offline LLM solution leverages Rockchip RK3588S’ NPU (Crowdfunding)

Useful Sensors “AI in a box” LLM (large language model) solution works offline with complete privacy and leverages the NPU in Rockchip RK3588S processor for conversational AI similar to ChatGPT but without an internet connection or registration required. Cool Pi has put its CM5 Rockchip RK3588 system-on-module to good use by integrating it into a 14.1-inch laptop with 1920×1080 resolution running Android 12, Ubuntu 22.04, or other Linux distributions. Turing RK1 RK3588 system-on-module for cluster boards is now available (for pre-order)

Turing Pi has been making mini-ITX cluster boards for Raspberry Pi CM4 and NVIDIA Jetson modules for over four years, but last year, the company teased their own Turing RK1 system-on-module based on a powerful Rockchip RK3588 Arm processor with 6 TOPS NPU while launching the Turing Pi 2 cluster board on Kickstarter and raising over 2 million dollars in the process. The Turing RK1 is now available for pre-order with the 8GB RAM going for $130, the 16GB model for $170, and you’d have to spend $260 if you need 32GB RAM. Most people will probably want to add $10 to purchase the RK1 heatsink with a built-in fan as well. Pre-orders are expected to start shipping on October 27. We recently noted Firefly had started selling their Rockchip RK3588(S) boards with 32GB RAM, but pricing starts at $469, so lower cost options may be worth a look at, and Liontron sells a Rockchip RK3588 motherboard with 32GB RAM for $352 including shipping (note: it’s a brand new shop started in June 2023). The single board computer also comes with up to 128GB eMMC flash, SATA storage support, HDMI 2.1 video output, three LCD interfaces, dual Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, and more. Firefly’s Rockchip RK3588 SBCs are now available with 32GB RAM

The Rockchip RK3588 datasheet clearly states the processor supports up to 32 GB RAM, and many vendors claimed their board supports up to 32GB RAM at launch, but none were to be found once you accessed a shop, and the maximum was 16GB RAM so far, likely due to availability and the high price of of the two 16GB RAM chips needed to get 32GB of RAM. But Firefly has now discreetly started to sell boards with 32GB RAM including the ROC-RK3588-PC, ROC-RK3588S-PC, and ITX-3358J mini-ITX motherboard. I’ve just noticed I never covered the former, so I’ll have a closer look at it today.
