Ziilabs uploaded an impressive video that shows the Ziilabs ZMS-40 simultaneously decoding 6 High Definition Videos (although they don’t say if it’s 720p or 1080p) with 5 H.264 videos and 1 VP8/WebM video and rendering them on 3D objects via OpenGL ES. That’s quite amazing, but the next question could be why would you need that much processing power in a chip aimed at tablets? Augmented reality perhaps… Jean-Luc Aufranc (CNXSoft)Jean-Luc started CNX Software in 2010 as a part-time endeavor, before quitting his job as a software engineering manager, and starting to write daily news, and reviews full time later in 2011. www.cnx-software.com
Ziilabs MandelMark Benchmark Shows ZMS-40 GPU Compute Performance is 18 Times Faster than Nvidia Tegra 3
Ziilabs released comparative GPU compute benchmark results for its ZMS-40 stem cells processor and made available its MandelMark floating point benchmark for Android 4.0 as an apk file. Since Ziilabs is using its own benchmark tool, which they released as a binary but did not open source, the results should be taken with a grain of salt. GPU Compute (aka GPGPU – General Purpose computing on GPU) is a technique to use the GPU to perform complex calculations usually performed by the CPU. MandelMark benchmark visualizes the solutions to the Mandelbrot to measure the floating point performance of mobile processors. Ziilabs compared their ZMS-40 Quad Core Cortex A9 processor with 96 stemcell cores to the following competitors: IPAD 3 – Apple A5X processor with a quad-core PowerVR SGX543MP4 GPU Galaxy Tab 7+ – Samsung Exynos 4210 processor with a quad-core ARM Mali-400 GPU Galaxy Nexus – TI OMAP 4460 processor […]
Ziilabs Unveils HanZpad Android 4.0 Tablet Reference Design
ZiiLABS, a subsidiary of Creative Technology, has announced the HanZpad platform, a tablet reference design based on ZiiLABS ZMS-40 StemCell Media Processor (4 ARM Cortex A9 cores and 96 GPU cores) optimized for Android 4.x (ICS) and a Chinese operating system. The HanZpad platform is built around Ziilabs ZMS-40 processors with four 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A9 CPUs and 96-core for the GPU. The ZMS-40 SoC supports H.264 HP decoding of up to 3840×1080 for true 1080p 3D stereo, and 2560×1600 (WQXGA) display resolution support. The firmware can also be upgraded to support for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) aka H.265 which can increase data compression ratio by up to 2 times compared to H.264. Beyond the ZMS-40 processor, the key features of the tablet are as follows: 10.1-inch, 1,280 x 800-pixels IPS panel 1GB memory micro SDHC slot (up to 64GB) Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity 22-hour battery life (~1W power consumption) […]
Ziilabs ZMS-40 Quad Core Cortex A9 SoC is now Available
Ziilabs has just announced the availability of its 100-core ZMS-40 StemCell Media processor optimized for Android tablets. The ZMS-40 combines 96 of ZiiLABS’ StemCell media processing cores with four 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A9 CPUs. The number of StemCell Media processors has doubled compared to the dual core ZMS-20. Ziilabs’ own GPU benchmark called MandelMark shows a 2X increase in performance or a 50% reduction in power consumption. The benchmark is not yet available for download, but the company plans to release it in Q1 2012 as an apk file. This processor competes directly with the Nvidia Tegra 3 in terms of CPU and GPU performance. It may actually beat it, as it can support dual independent displays (see below for details). Here are ZMS-40 Key Features: Quad 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A9 cores with Neon ZiiLABS flexible Stemcell media processing capabilities Low-energy SIMD architecture for high performance media acceleration 96x 32-bit floating point […]
Android 4.0 Demo on Ziilabs Jaguar Tablet Reference Design
Yet another Android 4.0 demo on a development platform. This time, Android 4.0.1 runs on a Jaguar Tablet powered by Ziilabs ZMS-20 ARM Cortex A9 processor. It runs pretty smoothly. OpenCL (Open Computing Language) Overview and SDKs
OpenCL (Open Computing Language) is a multi-vendor open standard for general-purpose parallel programming of heterogeneous systems that include CPUs, GPUs and other processors. OpenCL provides a uniform programming environment for software developers to write efficient, portable code for highperformance compute servers, desktop computer systems and handheld devices. OpenCL standard is managed and defined by the Khronos Group. The latest version (OpenCL 1.1) was ratified by the Khronos Group on the 14th of June 2010 and adds significant functionality for enhanced parallel programming flexibility, functionality and performance including: Host-thread safety, enabling OpenCL commands to be enqueued from multiple host threads. Sub-buffer objects to distribute regions of a buffer across multiple OpenCL devices. User events to enable enqueued OpenCL commands to wait on external events. Event callbacks that can be used to enqueue new OpenCL commands based on event state changes in a non-blocking manner. 3-component vector data types. Global work-offset which […]
