We’ve written several articles detailing methods to flash firmware to Rockchip devices in Windows or Linux over the years, with tools like RKAndroidTool, RkFlashKit, upgrade_tool, or the open-source rkdeveloptool utility. This is mostly useful to flash another OS or if the device does not boot, as most products will now support OTA firmware updates. But following my review of Zidoo M6 with Android 11, I’ve now got a Linux image for the Rockchip RK3566 mini PC, so let’s revisit the firmware flashing methods in 2021. Zidoo sent me instructions for Windows, but since I’m a Ubuntu user, I flashed the firmware with the Linux tools used by Firefly. The same methods should work for the older processors such as RK3066, RK3288, and RK3399, besides the more recent Rockchip RK3566 and RK3568 processors. How to flash Rockchip firmware in Linux [Important update: If your device comes with both eMMC flash and […]
Picovoice Cobra Voice Activity Detection Engine shown to outperform Google WebRTC VAD
Picovoice Cobra Voice Activity Detection (VAD) engine has just been publicly released with support for Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone, NVIDIA Jetson Nano, Linux 64-bit, macOS 64-bit, Windows 64-bit, Android, iOS, and web browsers that support WebAssembly. Support for other Cortex-M and Cortex-A based SoCs can also be made available but only to enterprise customers. Picovoice already offered custom wake word detection with an easy and quick web-based training and offline voice recognition for Raspberry Pi, and even later ported their voice engine to Arduino. Cobra VAD is a new release, and, like other VADs, aims to detect the presence of a human voice within an audio stream. Picovoice Cobra can be found on Github, but note this is not an open-source solution, and instead, libpv_cobra.so dynamic library is provided for various targets, together with header files and demos in C, Python, Rust, and WebAssembly, as well as demo apps for iOS […]
25-45W Intel Tiger Lake-H Xeon, Core, and Celeron embedded processors coming soon
While doing some research, I noticed an Intel Core i7-11850HE “Tiger Lake-H” processor on the OpenVino Toolkit website. Parts that end with “E” are usually processors designed for the embedded market. I had never heard about the Tiger Lake-H embedded family, so I looked for “i7-11850HE” processor, and it’s not in Intel Ark, or much anywhere else except on a page in Google Cache, about a COM-HPC module “with the 11th Gen Intel® Xeon® W-11000E Series, Core™ vPro® and Celeron® processors (formerly Tiger Lake-H) for FuSa application”. There we have a list of Xeon, Core, and Celeron 11th generation processors that I don’t think have ever been announced: Intel Celeron 6600HE dual-core processor @ 2.6GHz with 8MB L3 Cache, 35W TDP Intel Core i3-11100HE processor with 4 cores / 8 threads @ 2.4GHz (up to 4.4GHz in Turbo Boost) with 8MB L3 Cache, 45/35W cTDP Intel Core vPRO i5-11500HE processor […]
SolidRun HoneyComb LX2K becomes a certified Arm SystemReady ES platform
SolidRun HoneyComb LX2K is part of our list of the 5 most powerful Arm SBC’s in 2021. The mini-ITX board features an NXP LX2160A 16-core Arm Cortex-A72 processor, supports up to 64GB RAM, offers high-speed networking thanks to up to 4x SFP+ 10GbE cages and a Gigabit Ethernet port, as well as four SATA ports, a PCIe x8 slot, M.2 SSD slot and more. The board is ideal for networking applications and can be also be integrated into an Arm workstation for native application development. But just last month, we noted that while SolidRun talked about SBSA compliance a while ago, the status was unclear. The good news is that HoneyComb LX2K has just now become a certified Arm SystemReady ES (Embedded Server) compliant platform. Arm SystemReady is a set of standards and a compliance certification program that ensures systems just work with generic, off-the-shelf operating systems straight out of […]
OnLogic Elkhart Lake fanless mini PC’s are made for IIoT applications
Intel Atom x6000E Series, Celeron and Pentium Elkhart Lake IoT Edge processors were introduced in September 2020, and we covered several Elkhart Lake modules and SBC’s. We’ve seen fewer full systems such as the Atom x6425RE based Vecow SPC-6000 Elkhart Lake mini PC for embedded & IoT applications. But OnLogic is more offering four more choices with Helix 300 and Karbon K400 Series of rugged fanless mini PCs, all equipped with Atom, Celeron, or Pentium Elkhart Lake processors, and designed for industrial IoT (IIoT) or Industry 4.0 applications Helix 300 Series Specifications The Helix 300 family is comprised of two models with Helix 310 and Helix 330 share most of the same specifications: SoC – Intel Celeron N6211 dual-core processor or Pentium J6425 quad-core processor System Memory – Up to 32 GB DDR4 RAM Storage – M.2 Storage Video Output – 3x DisplayPort for triple independent display setups Audio – […]

Rock Pi X Review – An Atom x5 SBC running Windows 10 or Ubuntu 20.04
The ROCK Pi X is the first x86 SBC (single board computer) from Radxa and resulted from repeated enquiries about running Windows on their earlier ROCK Pi 4. The ROCK Pi X comes in two models (Model A and Model B) with each model having either 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB of RAM and either 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB of eMMC storage. Additionally, the Model B includes WiFi and Bluetooth together with supporting Power over Ethernet (PoE) although this requires an additional HAT. Both Seeed Studio and Radxa provided samples and in this review, I’ll cover some performance metrics from both Windows and Ubuntu and also discuss the thermals. Rock Pi X Hardware Overview The ROCK Pi X is similar in size to a Raspberry Pi board… but with slightly different ports and port locations even when compared to the Raspberry Pi 4. It is physically slightly larger than its […]
