There are now plenty of affordable ARM based Android and Linux development board which you can use to develop apps that access hardware drivers, and a few Intel based ones have also started to pop-up such as Galileo and Minnowboard MAX. The problem, for Microsoft, is that none of them currently support Windows. You could always use a PC to develop Windows apps, but this may become a problem once you start dealing with embedded devices and want to access undiscoverable buses such as GPIOs, serial interfaces and so on, as PCs are also protected by secure boot which limits developing and testing third-party drivers. So Microsoft has decided to join the affordable development boards bandwagon, starting with Intel Shark Cove development board for Windows developers. There are very few technical details about the board, but we do know it will based on an Intel Atom processor, and provide access […]

AAEON EMB-KB1 AMD G-Series SoC based mini-ITX Embedded Motherboard
AMD announced their G-Series SoC combining CPU, GPU and chipset in a single chip nearly a year ago, but AAEON EMB-KB1 is the first mini-ITX board I’ve ever heard of using these embedded SoCs. The board features first generation AMD SoCs in dual and quad core configuration, with up to 16GB RAM, up to 9 USB interfaces, 2 SATA III ports, and 2 USB 3.0 ports. AAEON EMB-KB1 hardware specifications: SoC GX-420CA quad-core CPU @2.0GHz with AMD Radeon HD 8400E GPU @600MHz – 25W TDP GX-217GA dual-core CPU @1.65GHz with AMD Radeon HD 8280E GPU @450MHz – 15W TDP System Memory – 2x SODIMM sockets for up to 16GB DDR3/DDR3L @ 1600MHz/1333MHz Storage – 2x SATA III (6.0Gb/s) I/O Chipset – Fintek F8186D-I Connectivity – 2x Gigabit Ethernet (Realtek 8111F) Video Output – 1x LVDS, 1x VGA, and 1x DVI up to 1080p or 1920×1200 Audio – Mic-in, line-out, and […]
DATA MODUL mini-ITX Board Supports Freescale i.MX6 & Intel Bay Trail-I QSeven Modules
DATA MODUL, a specialist supplier of display technology, has recently unveiled eDM-mITX-CB-Q7-Info, a mini-ITX Baseboard for ARM & x86 Qseven modules optimized to drive large panels for digital signage applications. In theory, the board should support any Qseven modules, but for now only Data Modul’s Freescale i.MX6, and Congatec conga-QA3 Intel Atom E3800 series modules have been optimized and officially certified to work with the motherboard. Precisely, the board is optimized and certified for the following modules: DATA MODUL ARM Qseven SoMs: eDM-QMX6 (i.MX6Quad) eDM-DMX6 (i.MX6Dual) eDM-DLMX6 (i.MX6Dual lite) Congatec x86 Qseven SoMs: Conga-QA3 with Atom E3845 (Quad core) Conga-QA3 with Atom E382x (Dual core). Three models: Atom E3827, E3826 or E3825. Conga-QA3 with Atom E3815 (Single core) You may have heard about EDM, a competing module standard, previously, but the eDM prefix in the ARM modules or the mini-ITX board names has nothing to do with this standard, as […]
Fin is a Bluetooth Ring That Let You Control Your Devices with Your Fingers (Crowdfunding)
We’ve already seen smart rings with NFC rings that can be used for authentication and share small amount of data (e.g. business card data) with smartphones. Fin is a completely different type of smart ring that fits onto your thumb, and let you control Bluetooth enabled devices by tapping different phalanges on your fingers, and/or the palm of your hand. Here are some of Fin smart ring specifications: MCU – N/A Connectivity – Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and 4.0 Sensors – No details, but Fin can track accurate movement of your thumb on the palm and detect each phalanx of your finger where you are touching. IP Rating – IP67 (Dust and Waterproof) Battery – Li Po custom battery with micro-USB charging dock ; One charge will last for 1 week; more than one year durable. Misc – LED indicator The ring will work with Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Windows […]
RYVAL Elf Could Be the World’s Smallest USB Flash Drive
Hexino, a French company selling “fashion technology” under the brand RYVAL, may be offering the smallest USB flash drives available today with RYVAL Elf. This tiny mass storage device measure 1.8 cm x 1.8 cm x 0.68 cm, weights only 2 grams, and is available with capacities of 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB. The specifications listed on the company’s website are as follows: USB 2.0 compatible with Windows Vista, 7 and 8 Write speed – Up to 4 MB/s Read speed – Up to 12 MB/s Weight – 2 grams Dimensions – 18 mm x 18 mm x 6.8 mm Capacity – 8 GB to 32 GB Colors – Blue, Pink, and Green Material – Aluminium They only mention compatibility with Windows, but I don’t see why it could not work with Mac, Android, and Linux based devices and computers. It’s small enough to replace microSD cards for permanent storage expansion, […]
Intel Unveils Edison Board for Wearables at CES 2014 Keynote
After an earlier Intel presentation about Intel RealSense Technology by Mooly Eden, Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager, the newly appointed Intel CEO, Brian Krzanich, officially opened CES 2014 with the pre-show keynote. This time there was nothing about processors for PCs, and the announcement the most interesting and relevant to this blog was Intel Edison, a tiny SD-card sized board powered by a dual core Quark SoC. Specifications: SoC – Unnamed and new dual core Intel Quark SoC @ 400MHz manufactured with 22nm process technology. MCU – Unnamed Intel MCU (MCS 51??) to manage I/Os and other baseline functions. System Memory – LPDDR2 Storage – NAND Flash Connectivity – Wi-Fi and Blutooth 4.0 LE Dimensions – Just like an SD card The board will support Linux, and common open source tools used by the marker community. It will also support Wolfgram language and Mathematica. There will also be […]
