In the second part of 2014, we saw a big jump in performance thanks to Cortex A15 and A17 based SoCs, and higher clocked Cortex A9 processors such as Rockchip RK3288 and Amlogic S812, but in 2015, TV box companies have focused on lowering the price and adding features such as HDMI 2.0, instead of looking for higher and higher CPU and GPU performance, and they’ve also moved to 64-bit ARM platform. MinnowBoard Turbot SBC Gets an Intel Atom E3826 Dual Core Processor, FCC & CE Certification

MinnowBoard MAX launched las year as a low cost board based on Intel Bay Trail-I single or dual core processor, and was mostly targeting developers of embedded systems and hobbyists, but could not be used by OEMs as it lacked FCC & CE certifications. ADI Engineering designed a MinnowBoard compatible board named MinnowBoard Turbot with a faster Intel Atom E3826 dual core processor, FCC & CE certifications, and various other hardware modifications bringing improved HDMI, a better voltage regulator, and populating several connectors. MeegoPad T04 Cherry Trail mini PC Sells for $136

Right after writing about MeegoPad T03 TV stick, I noticed another product on Amazon, namely MeegoPad T04 which for once is not based on a Bay Trail processor, but instead the newer Intel Atom x5-Z8300 Cherry Trail quad core processor, and which sells for $139 on Aliexpress or $136 on Amazon US. Mini Review of MeLE PCG01 Intel HDMI TV Stick

I reviewed MeLE PCG03 mini PC powered by Intel Atom Z3735F processor at the beginning of the year, and there are now many different models from manufacturer which all come with the same processor, 2GB RAM, and 32GB storage either in box or stick form factor. MeLE also released their own Bay Trail stick, similar to Intel Compute Stick, called MeLE PCG01, which they sent me for review. Most of these products are very similar, and all run Windows 8.1 by default, so the main differentiating factor between companies being price, whether they use a properly licensed version of Windows or not, and the thermal design of the enclosure, which may also impact performance as a good design will prevent CPU throttling. $134 Voyo V2 mini PC Comes with 96GB Storage, a Larger Built-in Battery

Most low cost Windows mini PCs based on Intel Bay Trail-T processors ship with 32GB internal storage, but as I found out with MeLE PCG03 mini PC it gets filled pretty quickly. So a few mini PCs have started to increase capacity to 64GB, as was the case with Voyo mini PC, which also included a small battery, but with version 2 of Voyo the company has decided to go with a 32 eMMC combined with a 64GB SSD, and a 4,500 or 8,000 mAh battery. We’ve already seen Chinese mini PCs based on Intel Bay Trail-D processors for less than $200, even with a 500 GB HDD as found in VX2 mini PC, but if you’d like to buy from a more established brand, Dell has launched two models of Inspiron 3050 Micro Desktop with Intel Celeron J1800 (dual core) and Pentium J2900 (quad core) selling respectively for $179.99 and $229.99 direct from Dell US, and they also have built-in Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11ac that you may not always find in the cheaper Chinese models.
