The Beaglebord Community Launches The Beaglebone Cape Design Contest

The Beagleboard community has just announced the BeagleBone Cape Plug-in Board Design Contest. All you need to do (more easily said than done) is to design a Capefor the Beaglebone and submit the relevant materials during the contest period (November 1 – December 31, 2012) and if you’re one of the winner, you’ll receive cash prizes, a free devkit and you’ll become a Beagleboard community “God” as your Cape will be manufactured and sold through CircuitCo Electronics. To enter the competition, you’ll need to do the following by the 31st of December 2012: Come up with an original cape design and upload the Schematic layout and Bill of Materials (>$60) to an online sharing site (ex: Google Drive, Github) set for public view. Embest SBC8118 Single Board Computer Based on TI AM1808 Processor

Embest recently unveiled the SBC8118 Single Board Computer, an industrial grade SBC powered by Texas Instruments AM1808 ARM9 processor with 128MB Mobile DDR2 RAM and 128MB NAND Flash. The SBC8118 Single Board Computer is aimed at medical, industrial automation, control, communication, and other cost sensitive applications. Rowboat Releases Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean for Beagleboard-XM and Beaglebone

Rowboat announced a preliminary version of Android 4.1.1 (Jean Bean) for beagleboard and beaglebone platforms last week. These releases support SGX (3D graphics acceleration) on both Texas Instruments Sitara AM37x processor (Beagleboard-XM) and AM335x processor (Beaglebone), and all download and build instructions are available on their Wiki: Jellybean On Beagleboard JellybeanOn Beaglebone – Tested with LCD7 cape. $39 Variscite VAR-SOM-AM33 SoM Powered by TI Sitara AM335x

Variscite has announced a new system-on-module based on Texas Instruments Sitara Cortex A8 AM335x processors (AM3352 or AM3354) named VAR-SOM-AM33, which sells for as little as $39 US (in large quantities I assume). This SoM is available in commercial and industrial grades, and the company expects the module to be used in applications such as automotive, control systems, lighting, refining and processing. LinuxCon North America 2012 Schedule

LinuxCon (North America) 2012 will take place on August 29 – 31, 2012 at Sheraton Hotel & Marina, in San Diego, California. The event will be co-located with the Linux Kernel Summit, the Linux Plumbers Conference, and CloudOpen 2012. Texas Instruments Launchpad MSP-EXP430G2 & Capacitive Touch Booster

This is a guest post about the low cost Launchpad MCU devkit. This kit was unveiled in 2010, but since I’d never written about this $4.30 development kit previously, I’ve accepted to publish the post below with slight modifications and amendments.
