Fedora 19 ARM Remix R1 Release With Support for AllWinner A10, A10s, A13 and A20 SoCs

After releasing a stable version of Fedora 18 for AllWinner A10 and A13 in February, Hans de Goede, working at Red Hat and a Fedora contributor, has recently announced “Fedora 19 ARM remix for Allwinner SOCs” on linux-sunxi community mailing list. This released based on Fedora 19 for ARM together with linux-sunxi kernel and u-boot, adds support for A10s and A20 based devices, and 38 boards and devices are now supported. To give it a try, download the 665MB image:

then write it to an SD card (8GB or greater):

Where you have to replace [device] with your actual SD card device, e.g. sdc.Since u-boot is board/product specific, you’ll also have to update u-boot for your hardware. Remove the SD card, re-insert it, and run:<

to display a graphical menu (if dialog is installed on your Linux PC), or a list supported boards and products:

Systena Tizen Tablet Hands-on Video

Systena, a Japanese company, is currently developing a Tizen tablet with a quad core Cortex A9 processor at 1.4Ghz, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. The tablet features a 10.1″display (1920×1080), supports 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and comes with a microSD card slot, as well as a 2MP rear camera and 0.3Mp front camera. Tizen Indonesia got a prototype of the tablet, and give it a try in the video below (no audio). We can see the boot, lock screen and gallery application. The system does not seem very fluid at this stage of development, but hopefully Tizen will be optimized for better performance before the final release. The system currently runs Tizen 2.0, but the company plans to upgrade to Tizen 2.1 for the developer version of the device, before selling the device to the general public. Via Liliputing and Tizen Experts Jean-Luc Aufranc (CNXSoft)Jean-Luc started CNX Software in 2010 […]

This Low End Android Tablet Comes with a (Non-Removable) Stand with Speaker

The tablet shown below has pretty low specifications with an AllWinner A13 SoC, 512 MB RAM, 4GB, a 7″ 800×480 display, and a not so attractive price. However its stand makes it somewhat unique, and this tablet may be practical as a media frame, kitchen tablet, or possibly as an input console for some external device. Here are the specifications of the device: SoC – Allwinner A13 ARM Cortex-A8 Processor @ 1GHz with Mali-400 GPU System Memory – 512 MB Storage – 4GB NAND Flash + (full size) SD card slot Display – 7″ capacitive touchscreen TFT display with 800×480 resolution Connectivity – Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n Sensor – Gravity USB – mini USB port Battery – Unknown Audio – Built-in speaker This Android 4.0 tablet comes with a power adapter, an OTG cable, and a user’s manual. HP Unveils Slate 21 AIO Android PC and Tablet with a 21.5″ Touchscreen

Hewlett Packard has announced an all-in-one desktop PC in Beijing featuring a 21.5″ touch screen that ships with Android 4.2.2 instead of the usual (for dekstop PCs) Windows 8 operating system. It’s a concept we’ve seen before with devices such as Frontier FT103, but HP Slate 21 AIO is much more powerful with Nvidia Tegra 4 quad core cortex A15 against the TI OMAP4 used in the Frontier PC. HP Slate 21 AIO (partial) specifications: SoC – Nvidia Tegra 4 quad core Cortex A15 processor System Memory – Unknown Storage – 8GB memory + SD card slot Display – 21.5″ 10-point capacitive touchscreen IPS display with 1920×1080 resolution Connectivity – Wi-Fi Direct and BT 3.0. Camera – Front-facing webcam USB – 3x USB 2.0 Host ports Audio – Stereo speakers, DTS audio. That’s all we know at this time, but since we can also connect a USB keyboard and mouse, […]

Samsung Unveils ATIV Q Android & Win8 Convertible Tablet, Galaxy NX DSLR Camera Running Android 4.2

Samsung Premiere 2013 took place yesterday in London, and the company announced 9 new products at the event. But 2 devices really stood out for me: ATIV Q – A 13.3″ tablet convertible to a notebook that runs Windows 8 and Android 4.2.2 simultaneously. Galaxy NX – a DSLR Camera running Android 4.2.2 supporting interchangeable lenses. Galaxy S4 Active was also interesting as it’s compliant with IP67, which means it’s dust proof and water resistant, so you don’t have to worry about dust / sand getting into the device, or dropping it into the water. It can stay under in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, and even though the touchscreen won’t operate under water, you can still take underwater pictures during your snorkeling trip. Don’t expect it to work for diving though. Samsung ATIV Q (Preliminary) Specifications: Processor – Intel Core i5 (Haswell) GPU – Intel HD Graphics […]

Rockchip RK3168 Powered Tablets Are Starting to Show Up for Sale

Rockchip first showcased a tablet prototype with RK3168 dual core processor at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair in April, showing lower power consumption compared to RK3066. At the time, tablets based on this processor were still in development, but this has changed as a few RK3168 tablets are now showing up in Aliexpress. Prices for 7″  Android tablets such as Cube U25GT PRO, are now about $110 as low as $75 including shipping, but this should come down as more sellers provide the devices. Cube U25GT PRO is an updated version of the U25GT pictured above. Here are the specifications of the PRO version: SoC –  Rockchip RK3168 @ 1.2 GHz with PowerVR SGX540 GPU System Memory – 512 MB RAM Storage – 8GB NAND Flash + micro SD card slot Display – 7″ 5 point touch capacitive screen (1024×600) Camera – 0.3MP front camera Connectivity – Wifi 802.11b/g/n + […]

Unu is an Android Tablet, a Gaming Console and a Smart TV

In the last year or so, we’ve started using Android set-top boxes or mini-PCs to make our TV smart and play games, and some products such as Ouya and Gamestick, using similar hardware, have been specifically designed for game play. But Unu Tablet, which can be used as a tablet (really), can also transform your TV into a gaming platform, and a smart connected TV, thanks to a docking station, and a game controller. Here are the known specifications for Unu tablet: SoC – 1.6 GHz quad-core chip (I’m guessing Rockchip RK3188). System Memory – Unknown Storage – 8GB NAND Flash + microSD card slot Display – 7″ IPS display, 1280×800 resolution. Connectivity – WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 USB – 2 microUSB ports Video Output – mini HDMI jack Camera – 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera This Android 4.2.2 tablet comes with a docking station that handles charging and […]

Hynix Announces 4GB LPDDR3 for Mobile Devices

More and more devices this year come with 2GB RAM in 4x 4Gbit configuration, and this is about the limit today because there aren’t 8Gbit (1GB) mobile RAM chipset available. This is about the change as Hynix has just announced they have developed 8Gbit LPDDR3 based on 20nm process technology. Hynix new memory can be stacked up to provide 4GB (Gigabyte) in a single package that can be provided as ‘PoP’ (Package on Package), or the memory can be bundled with eMMC. Existing LPDDR3 chipsets work at up to 1600Mbps, but Hynix memory will be able to achieve 2133Mbps data transmission speed, an increase of about 33 percent. That means it can process up to 8.5GB of data per second in a single channel, and 17GB in a dual channel using 32-bit I/O. Samples have already been shipped to customers, mass production should start at the end of this year, […]
