Soap is a Touchscreen Enabled Router Supporting Gigabit Ethernet and Lots of Wireless Standards (Crowdfunding)

Soap is a strange creature, and I’m not convinced there are that many use cases for such hardware, but I find it interesting that the developers decided to pack a Freescale i.MX6 Solo/Dual or Quad SoC powered Android 4.4 tablet and a router supporting five Gigabit Etherner ports, as well as WiFI 802.11ac, Wi-0Fi 802.11 b/g/n,  Zigbee, Z-wave, Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE), Insteon RF, X10, 433Mhz, NFC, and infrared into one and only device which they call an “Intelligent Home Management Hub”.  It’s also complete with an HDMI output port so that you can use it as a media player. Let’s go through the specifications for the four version this little monster (Soap Solo, Soap Dual, Soap Quad, and Soap 8.4): SoC Soap Solo – Freescale i.MX6 Solo single ARM Cortex A9 @ 1 GHz with Vivante GC880 3D GPU Soap Dual – Freescale i.MX6 Dual dual ARM Cortex A9 @ […]

Google Unveils Project Tango Tablet Development Kit Powered by Nvidia Tegra K1 SoC

Earlier this year, Google ATAP (Advanced Technology and Products) showcased project tango phone prototype, capable of generating 3D maps in real-time thanks to cameras, motion sensors, and two Movidius Myriad 1 Mobile Vision processors paired with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 application processor, and since March, they’ve already sent a few hundred samples to developers. Google has now announced another development kit, this time a tablet powered by Nvidia Tegra K1 quad core SoC. Tango tablet has the following hardware specifications: SoC – Nvidia Tegra K1 quad core Cortex A15 with Kepler GPU System Memory – 4GB RAM Storage – 128GB Display – 7″ screen Connectivity – WiFi, BlueTooth Low Energy, and 4G LTE Camera – 120 deg. wide angle front camera, 4MP rear camera, and motion tracking camera Sensors – Integrated depth sensing The tablet will run Google’s KitKat Android operating system, and support features such as OpenGL 4.4 thanks to the […]

Intel Showcases Tablet / 2-in-1 Reference Design based on 14nm “Broadwell” Core M SoC

Intel has unveiled a thin tablet reference design at Computex 2014, in Taiwan, which is based on their upcoming “Broadwell” Core M processor manufactured using 14nm process technology, which will be the most power efficient Intel Core processor to date. Intel fanless mobile PC reference design features a 7.2mm thick, 12.5″ tablet that weights 670 grams. You can also connect it to a media dock providing additional cooling allowing more performance, as well as a keyboard dock. Intel expects 2-in-1 products (tablet + laptop) based on Intel Core M to be available later this year.     Intel claims 60% lower power dissipation, 20 to 40% better performance, and 10 to 45% low SoC power, and half the package footprint compared to third generation “Haswell” Core processors, which will allow fanless and thin designs. Currently Mobile Haswell Core processors have a maximum TDP of 11.5W to 47W, so in theory, at best, Broadwell SoCs might achieve […]

Allwinner has just announced a new quad cortex ARM Cortex A7 SoC for entry-level Android tablets. AllWinner A33  shares many of the features of AllWinner A23 dual core Cortex A7, including an ARM Mali-400MP2 GPU, and provides pin-to-pin compatibility, with the main difference being the upgrade from two to four Cortex A7 cores. The company has already disclosed the main specifications of their new SoC: CPU – Quad core ARM Cortex A7 with 256 KB L1 Cache, 512KB L2 cache GPU – ARM Mali-400MP2 with support for OpenGL ES 2.0/VG 1.1 standards Memory DDR3/DDR3L SDRAM controller 8-bit NAND/eMMC flash controller  Video Decoding – 1080p60 video playback for MPEG-1/2, MPEG 4 SP/ASP GMC, H.263, H.264, WMV9/VC-1, VP8, and more Encoding – 1080p60 for H.264 Complies with RTSP, HTTP, HLS, RTMP, MMS streaming protocols Supports OpenMAX API Display 1 to 4 lane MIPI DSI up to 1280×800 RGB/CPU/LVDSLCD up to 1280×800 Camera – […]

MediaTek MT8127 SoC to Bring H.265 Video Support to Mid-Range Android Tablets

MediaTek has just announced MT8127, a quad core ARM Cortex A7 processor @ 1.5 GHz with Mali-450MP GPU, that provides hardware support for HEVC (H.265) video playback, and targets “super-mid” range Android tablets. HEVC/H.265 video codec will allow to half the required bandwidth and/or storage for a given quality compared to H.264, or to greatly improve quality at the same bitrate. The latest Mediatek processor will also support 1080p video playback and recording, and up to 13MP cameras, as well as  1920×1200 LCD screen display. As with other Mediatek SoCs,  a Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, FM receiver and GPS combo-chip can be coupled with MTK8127. The company also claims Miracast and NFC support. The first tablets to integrate this solution will be ALCATEL ONETOUCH PIXI 7 and Cube U25GT, as well as ALCATEL ONETOUCH PIXI 8, which will be launched later this year.
