Everyday I read hundreds of articles trying to find something interesting to write on CNX Software blog, and one way I keep track of news is to subscribe to RSS feeds using Thunderbird. From time to time, feeds get broken due to updates making them fail RSS validation, and today I noticed Samsung ARTIK feed had stopped working, so I went to the website, and… Wait… What closure of ARTIK business? It turns out Samsung Electronics decided to shutdown their ARTIK product line in December 2018 as reported by Business Korea: Samsung Electronics will pull the plug on its ARTIK project in four years after starting to develop the internet of things (IoT) platform. … IT industry experts say that Samsung decided to halt the ARTIK project because of its poor results. Samsung wanted to build an IoT ecosystem and lead the IoT market through the ARTIK project but it […]

There are actually four variants of Galaxy S10, with S10+ model coming with up to 12GB RAM, 1TB flash storage, and a 6.4″ display, S10e phone with a smaller 5.8″ display, as low as 6GB RAM, and 128 to 256GB flash storage, and S10 5G with a 5G modem, a larger 6.7″ display, 6 cameras, and a larger 4,500 mAh battery. Many consider Samsung Galaxy phones to be the reference when it comes to Android phones, so let’s have a look at the technical specifications and features to see if there’s anything really new beside more processing power, and memory. Galaxy S10, S10+, S10e, and S10 5G phones share many of the same specifications: SoC (one or […]
Smartphones in 2019 – Foldable Displays, Button-Free & Port-Free Experiences
In recent years, I’ve found smartphones releases mostly underwhelming with some incremental improvement in performance, better cameras, the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack, and in some case a notch appeared in the design for the camera, but nothing that radically changes the market. 2019 may be a different year, as smartphones with foldable displays will be launched, and some companies will introduce smartphone without any buttons, nor ports. Foldable Phones So far at least four companies have announced plans for foldable phones as Google is implementing foldables support in Android. We’ve already covered Samsung Infinity screen in the previous link, but there have been reports a new $1,5000 Motorala Razr phone is coming up with a foldable display, and a Royole FlexPai prototype was demonstrated at CES 2019 with a 7.8″ AMOLED display that folds in half and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. The latter is actually the first […]

Samsung Exynos Auto V9 Octa-core Cortex A76 Processor Targets Automotive Infotainment Systems
Samsung Exynos processors are well known for their use in mobile processor, but the company has now announced their first automotive grade processor with Exynos Auto V9 SoC featuring eight Cortex A76 cores clocked at up to 2.1 GHz, a Mali G76 GPU, a HiFi 4 audio digital signal processor (DSP), an intelligent neural processing unit (NPU), and a safety island core that supports Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL)-B standards. Exynos Auto V9 does not come with the latest Cortex-A76AE cores for autonomous driving, as instead the processor is specifically designed for in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems, and will be found in Audi cars starting in 2021. The processor also supports LPDDR4 and LPDDR5 DRAM, can control up to six independent displays and twelve cameras. Three separate sets of Mali G76 GPU cores will enable simultaneous support for the cluster display, central information display (CID) and rear-seat entertainment (RSE). The NPU […]

Linux on DeX (Linux on Samsung Android Phones & Tablets) Enters Private Beta
Samsung unveiled “Linux on Galaxy” a little over a year ago with the aim of allowing developers to running Linux desktop on their high Galaxy smartphones coupled with DeX Station dock, keyboard, mouse and display. It was not quite ready for public consumption yet, so I registered to their mailing list to get more information in due time. This morning, I received an email with the subject “Register for the Linux on DeX beta trail” that reads in part: As an early adopter, you signed up for Linux on Galaxy at the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2017. This service allows you to project a Linux development environment onto a desktop environment, complete with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. So you can bring your code with you, wherever you go. This year, we have renamed the service Linux on DeX, and are beginning a private beta trial. Please visit our booth […]
Foldables to Get Official Support in Android, Samsung Unveils Infinity Flex Display
Several Android mobile device categories have been launched to the market with smartphones, tablets, phablets, smartwatches, etc… But there’s a new category coming soon: foldables. They will be two variants: those with two display side-by-side such as ZTE Axon M, and smartphone with flexible displays that bend and fold, and are likely to be more popular. Google has just announced official support for foldables in Android, and Samsung has unveiled their Infinity Flex Display for foldables. Android will support both variants of foldables. When folded, foldables look like normal phones, but when unfolded, the screen size doubles transforming the phone into a tablet of sort. Android will automatically resize the screen in a seamless fashion which Google calls “screen continuity”. You can start a video with the phone folded, and when you open it it will neatly switch to the bigger screen tablet-like experience. Several manufacturers will come with foldables, […]
