Barracuda App Server for ESP32 Let You Easily Develop Lua Apps via Your Web Browser

Barracuda App Server ESP32

We covered Real Time Logic’s open-source lightweight Minnow Server for microcontrollers last year, and now the company has released another project: Barracuda App Server for ESP32. This project is more complex and requires an ESP32 board with PSRAM to run such as boards based on ESP32-WROVER module with 4 to 8MB PSRAM. The Barracuda App server (BAS) comes with a Lua VM, and in complement with the LSP App Manager that facilitates active development on the ESP32 by providing a web interface. The Barracuda App Server runs on top of FreeRTOS real-time operating system part of Espressif free ESP-IDF development environment. The company provides instructions to build BAS from source, as well as the LSP (Lua Server Pages ) App Manager that links to the binary-only BAS library. The Linux version of the ESP-IDF is recommended, so in Windows, you should install the “Windows Subsystem for Linux” first. The source […]

Minnow Server is a Secure Web Server for Microcontrollers

Minnow Server Secure Websocket

Many embedded systems have a limited amount of memory, which would normally run programs with smaller footprints than on desktops or servers. For example, nginx and Apache2 are the common web servers, but on hardware with limited memory, smaller footprint web servers may be required, so that’s why I wrote a list of web servers for embedded systems running Linux/uClinux many years ago. But now, even platforms based on microcontrollers often need to run web server usually for configuration. We’ve already shown how to use Arduino to serve a simple web page and did the same in Getting Started with NodeMCU Board Powered by ESP8266 WiSoC but using Lua programming language instead. It may be more convenient to run a proper web server however, as it’s easier to change the interface, and we previously covered MicroWebSrv lightweight web server that works on platforms running MicroPython such as Pycom boards. Real Time […]

Real Time Logic Releases Web-based SharkSSL FreeRTOS/lwIP ESP8266 IDE

Real Time Logic claims SharkSSL is the smallest, fastest, and best performing embedded TLS v1.0/1.1/1.2 solution. It works with ColdFire, Kinetis K60, all the Cortex-M3 and -M4 processors,  as well as Tensilica LX3 based ESP8266. The solutions can be tuned via compile-time options to a less than 20kB footprint that still supports full x.509 authentication. SharkSSL is a commercial solution, but the SDK is free to use for non-commercial projects. In order to simplify development on ESP826, the company has released the SharkSSL ESP8266 IDE running in a virtual machine, and providing a complete FreeRTOS and lwIP based development environment using a web based interface. Once you’ve downloaded the virtual machine image,  you can start it in VirtualBox or VMWare with bridged networking enabled. The IP address of the virtual machine will be shown in the console, and you can use it in your favorite web browser in the host […]
