Coin cell-powered OpenThread sensor board can send data every 20 seconds for three years

Thread Sensor Tag Openthread board

Monkey Store’s Thread Sensor Tag is a pressure, humidity, temperature, and light sensor that connects to the OpenThread network, and is capable of transmitting MQTT/UDP data every 20 seconds over a period of around three years from a single coin cell battery. As a reminder, OpenThread is an implementation of the Thread IoT network protocol that was unveiled in 2016 by Nest Labs (now Google/Alphabet). This has not been widely used so far, but we did write about MKR SharkyPro development board with OpenThread support via STMicro STM32WB5MMG wireless module earlier this year, and Monkey Store is telling us both Google and Apple are working on devices with support for the IoT protocol. Thread Sensor Tag specifications: Wireless module – Minew MS88SF2 based on Nordic Semi nRF52840 multi-protocol 2.4GHz wireless Cortex-M4 microcontroller Sensor VEMLS6030 I2C light sensor MS8607 pressure, humidity, and temperature sensor I/Os – 7x through holes with Tx/Rx, […]

Offline speech recognition MCU module comes with speaker, microphone, and UART connectors

offline voice recognition mcu module

We found out about Unisound US516P6 RISC microcontroller inside an offline voice assistant module last May. The module offers offline speech recognition for just $2 to $4, with good performance, and excellent privacy since no cloud service nor Internet connection is needed. That module requires some soldering, but if you’d prefer something easier to connect the “SU-10A” offline speech recognition MCU module comes with connectors for a speaker, a microphone, as well as UART connectivity to a host MCU if needed. “SU-10A” module specifications: MCU – Unisound US516P6 RISC microcontroller @ 240 MHz with FPU, DSP instruction, FFT accelerator, 242KB SRAM, 2MB flash Audio Built-in 3W mono Class AB power amplifier. 2mm pitch connector for speaker (4 Ohms up to 2.9W,  8 Ohms up to 1.8W) 2mm pitch connector for electret microphone Debugging/programming – UART port for serial console (5V or 3.3V supported) Host interface – 2mm pitch 4-pin connector […]

BL-63B – A smaller BL602 IoT module that sells for $1.5

Bouffalo Labs BL602 is a low-cost, low-power RISC-V microcontroller that offers 2.4 GHz WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0 LE connectivity for IoT projects for about the price of ESP8266. We first discovered it last year, together with a development board. Pine64 created its own PineCone board fitted with the $2 PineNut module, and some reverse-engineering work has started on BL602 SDK. But there’s now another smaller BL602 module with “Machine Intelligence” (that’s the company name) BL-63B that sells for $1.5 on Taobao in China, as well as on LCSC Electronics albeit you’d need to purchase 1000 pieces to get that price, and single-unit pricing is currently $2.5. BL-63B WiFI & BLE module specifications: SoC – Bouffalo Labs BL602 32-bit RISC-V processor @ up to 192 Mhz with 276KB RAM, 128KB ROM, 1Kbit eFuse, WiFi and BLE Storage – 2MB flash Wireless 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n WiFI 4 1×1 SISO up to 65 Mbps […]

Express-TL Tiger Lake-H COM Express module offers 8K video, PCIe Gen4 x16 connectivity

Tiger Lake-H COM Express

We just noticed some Intel Tiger Lake-H Xeon/Core/Celeron processors for embedded systems last week, and at the time it was not clear when they’d be announced and/or become available. It turns out it did not take long, as ADLINK has just unveiled their TL-Express COM Express Basic Size Type 6 module with the new processors. The new computer-on-module offers a more powerful alternative to the company’s cExpress-TL Tiger Lake UP3 COM Express Compact module, with up to 8 cores/16 threads, 128 GB memory, 8K video output, support for -40°C – 85°C industrial temperature range, and the company also claims it is the first COM Express module to support PCI Express Gen 4 x16, doubling the bandwidth of previous COM Express modules in the market. Express-TL COM Express Compact 6 CPU module specifications: Tiger Lake-H Embedded SoC (one or the other) Intel Celeron 6600HE dual-core processor @ 2.6GHz with 8MB L3 […]

$6 RAK3172 WisDuo LoRaWAN module features STMicro STM32WL LoRa SoC

RAK3172 WisDuo

RAK3172 WisDuo is a LoRaWAN module smaller than most coins with 15.5×15 mm dimensions made possible thanks to STMicro STM32WL Cortex-M4 LoRa SoC, which we previously found in Seeed Studio’s $10 LoRa-E5 module and corresponding development boards. But while Seeed Studio relies on STM32WLE5JC SoC with 256KB flash and 64KB RAM in a 73-pin UFBGA package, RAKwireless RAK3172 Wisduo is powered by STM32WLE5CC with the same amount of memory or storage, but in a  48-pin UFQFPN package, and an even lower price at just $5.99 in single units. RAK3172 Wisduo specifications: SoC – STMicro STM32WLE5CC55 Arm Cortex‐M4 MCU @ 48 MHz with 256 KB flash memory with ECC, 64 KB RAM, and a sub-GHz radio based on Semtech SX126x LoRaWAN 1.0.3 specification compliant Supported bands – EU433, CN470, IN865, EU868, AU915, US915, KR920, RU864, and AS923 LoRaWAN Activation by OTAA/ABP LoRa Point to Point (P2P) communication Range – Greater than […]
