MINIX has just launched a new mini PC in their NGC range called the NGC-5. Although it uses a somewhat dated Intel eighth-generation Core i5 processor, the integrated Iris Plus Graphics 655 is notable for being one of the more powerful iGPU solutions. MINIX kindly sent one for review and I’ve looked at performance running both Windows and Ubuntu together with using an eGPU. Hardware Overview The NGC-5 physically consists of a 153 x 153 x 43mm (6.02 x 6.02 x 1.57 inches) square plastic case. As an actively cooled mini PC, it uses Intel’s older 14 nm++ Core i5-8279U Coffee Lake processor which is a quad-core 8-thread 2.40 GHz processor boosting to 4.10 GHz with Intel’s Iris Plus Graphics 655. The front panel has just a LED power indicator whereas the rear panel includes dual gigabit Ethernet ports, dual USB 3.1 ports, a DisplayPort 1.2, an HDMI 2.0a port, […]
Linux 5.13 Release – Notable changes, Arm, MIPS and RISC-V architectures
Linus Torvalds has just announced the release of Linux 5.13: So we had quite the calm week since rc7, and I see no reason to delay 5.13. The shortlog for the week is tiny, with just 88 non-merge commits (and a few of those are just reverts). It’s a fairly random mix of fixes, and being so small I’d just suggest people scan the appended shortlog for what happened. Of course, if the last week was small and calm, 5.13 overall is actually fairly large. In fact, it’s one of the bigger 5.x releases, with over 16k commits (over 17k if you count merges), from over 2k developers. But it’s a “big all over” kind of thing, not something particular that stands out as particularly unusual. Some of the extra size might just be because 5.12 had that extra rc week. And with 5.13 out the door, that obviously means […]
MINIX NEO J50C-4 Max mini PC international giveaway
Right before Christmas, I posted a review of MINIX NEO J50C-4 Max mini PC powered by an Intel Pentium J5005 Gemini Lake processor coupled with 8GB RAM and a 240GB SSD. It’s basically the same as the previously reviewed MINIX NEO J50C-4 except for the extra memory and faster & higher capacity SSD storage. MINIX asked me if I could do a giveaway of three units on CNX Software after the review, and I thought it would be a good idea so here we are. I wanted to complete the review before launching the giveaway and tested MINIX NEO J50C-4 Max with the pre-installed Windows 10 Pro. I worked just as well as the previous model with no CPU throttling and the performance one should expect from a Gemini Lake processor, but you may want to add an extra 8GB memory stick to take advantage of the higher bandwidth provided […]
MINIX NEO J50C-4 Max mini PC review with 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD
Back in 2018 MINIX Introduced NEO J50C-4 Windows 10 Pro mini PC based on Intel Pentium J5005 Gemini Lake processor and fitted with 4GB RAM and 32GB eMMC flash. It never got released in this configuration, as due to Gemini Lake processors shortage the company relaunched it with a 64GB eMMC flash in 2019. Since then, the company launched the NEO J50C-4 Plus with a 240GB SSD and 4GB RAM, which I did not review. But now the Hong Kong company has introduced a new model with NEO J50C-4 Max equipped with 8GB RAM and 240GB SSD. I’ve just received a sample, but since the design and specifications are the same as the earlier NEO J50C model except for the SSD and RAM capacity, I’ll focus this mini review on the main differences, and small issues I had last year. NEO J50C-4 Max Unboxing The package looks familiar… And so […]
MINIX NEO P1 tiny 66W GaN USB-C power supply can handle up to 3 devices
I’m now using MINIX NEO P2 GaN USB-C charger for all review using USB powered devices. But with four-ports and up to 100W of power, it’s a bit over-powered for one or two Raspberry Pi 4 or equivalent SBCs, and it also costs around $60. So the Hong Kong company has now introduced a new model with MINIX NEO P1 being a tiny 66W GaAN USB-C power adapter with two USB-C ports and one USB Type-A port and international plug adapters that make ideal to use on the go. MINIX NEO P1 key features and specifications: Power Input – 100-240V AC input with 2-prong US plug and adapters for EU, UK, and AU Power Output Up to 66 W in total 2x USB Type-C ports support up to 65 W with USB PD 3.0 (5-15V/3A, 20V/3.25A) 1x USB Type-A port supports up to 36 W with QC 3.0 (5V/3A, 9V/3A, […]

Giveaway Week – MINIX NEO P2 100W USB-C Charger
MINIX NEO P2 is a 100W Turbo 4-Port GaN Charger with two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports with support for USB PD 3.0, and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. I’ve been using for recent reviews of NanoPI R2S & NEO3, as well as Raspberry Pi 400, and I really like it as it saves me a lot of space, I don’t have to worry about undervoltage, and I can power up to four boards from a single power supply. MINIX sent me two samples. I’ll keep one for me, and sent the unopened one to one of CNX Software readers. To enter the draw simply leave a comment with your country and whatever else you’d like to say. If the country is missing, I’ll consider the entry void. Other rules are as follows: Only one entry per contest. I will filter out entries with the same IP and/or email address. Contests […]

It’s a standard USB-C adapter with two USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, HDMI output up to 4Kp60, Gigabit Ethernet, and USB-C pass-through port. To enter the draw simply leave a comment with your country and whatever else you’d like to say. If the country is missing, I’ll consider the entry void.
