It’s raining i.MX 8M Plus systems-on-module at Embedded World 2021
NXP introduced i.MX 8M Plus AI SoC with a built-in 2.3 TOPS neural processing unit (NPU) last year, and we’ve already covered several early announcements about i.MX 8M Plus systems-on-module (SoM) with Variscite VAR-SOM-MX8M-PLUS and DART-MX8M-PLUS, TechNexion EDM-G-IMX8M-PLUS and AXON-E-IMX8M-PLUS respectively using SO-DIMM edge connectors and board-to-board connectors, as well as SolidRun i.MX 8M Plus SoM that was announced together with the HummindBoard Mate carrier board with dual Gigabit Ethernet. But as Embedded World 2021 Digital is taking place virtually until Friday, other companies have now made their own announcements of i.MX 8M Plus SoMs as the processor enters mass production this month, and since as far as I know, it’s pin-to-pin and software compatible with earlier i.MX 8M Nano/Mini SoCs, the update must have been easy. That means we’ve got a longish list of modules, and I have probably missed some. Supported operating systems are basically the same across […]

iWave Systems Launches NXP i.MX 8QuadMax / i.MX 8QuadPlus SBC
NXP i.MX 8 series family offers plenty of options from the i.MX 8X Cortex-A35 processor to i.MX 8QuadMax octa-core processor with two Arm Cortex-A72, four Arm Cortex-A53, and two Arm Cortex-M4F cores. We already covered plenty of i.MX 8 hardware on CNX Software, including a fair amount of i.MX 8QuadMax systems-on-module such as Toradex Apalis iMX8, iWave Systems iW-RainboW-G27M SMARC 2.0 SoM, Advantech ROM-7720 Qseven 2.1 computer-on-module, and others. But for some unknown reasons, there haven’t been that many i.MX 8QuadMax single board computer, and AFAICR we only wrote about Seco SBC-C43 board so far. But there’s now another option thanks to iWave Systems iW-Rainbow-G27S Pico-ITX SBC equipped with a choice of i.MX 8QuadMax or i.MX 8QuadPlus processor and up to 8GB RAM. iW-Rainbow-G27S specifications: SoC (one or the other)— NXP i.MX8 with VPU and HiFi4 DSP: NXP i.MX 8QuadMax with 2x Cortex-A72 cores, 4x Cortex-A53 cores, 2x Cortex-M4F real-time […]
iWave Systems Unveils iW-RainboW-G34M-SM i.MX 8M Mini/Nano System-on-Module
NXP nomenclature for their i.MX 8M processors can be a little confusing. First discovered in 2016, the original i.MX 8M processor family comes with one to four Arm Cortex-A53 cores, a real-time Cortex M4 core, targets multimedia application with FullHD or 4K decoding/encoding support and is manufactured using a 28nm process. NXP then announced i.MX 8M Mini processor family in February 2018 with a 14-nm FinFET processor allowing a higher maximum CPU frequency of 2.0 GHz, less video output interfaces (no HDMI, nor DisplayPort), and optional Full HD video encoder and decoder, .e.g no 4K. Finally, earlier this year, the company unveiled NXP i.MX 8M Nano further power-optimized with the same 14nm manufacturing process, but a lower frequency of 1.5 GHz, and a Cortex-M7 core replacing the Cortex-M4 core found in previous i.MX 8M processors. This allows i.MX 8M Nano SoC to have a 2W TDP, and achieve sub-watt power […]
