Extend VGA or HDMI Signals over “Ethernet” with VGA / HDMI Extender over Cat5/Cat6 Cables

Ethernet VGA Extender Kit

A host computer or media player may not always be in the same room as its display(s), for example for digital signage where you may want to have several displays controlled by one computer in different rooms, or if you want to add a display to one of your room without necessarily adding another TV box or set-top box. We’ve already seen solution to extend the video signals over a few hundred meters using a HDMI powerline extender or wireless AV transmitted / receiver kit. The former is rather expensive (~$250) and the latter only works with composite. Today, I’ve come across other video extender solutions relying on Cat5/Cat6 “Ethernet” cables, first with an Ethernet to VGA extender kit that sells for $12.99 shipped on Banggood, but there are also Ethernet to HDMI solutions for around $25 to $40 offering a range of up to 120 meters over Ethernet. Both […]

Yamaha RX-V385 A/V Receiver to Support eARC (part of HDMI 2.1 specifications)

HDMI 2.1 promises features such as 8K/10K video output, dynamic HDR, or enhanced audio return channel (eARC), but so far I had not seen any hardware boasting support for the new specifications. It’s not really surprising, as the HDMI Compliance Test Specifications (CTS) for HDMI 2.1 is expected to be released in stages starting in Q2 2018. While I have yet to see any HDMI 2.1 capable TV, Yamaha is already showing off a 5.1 A/V receiver allegedly HDMI 2.1 via their upcoming RX-V385 model that will be sold for $299.95 in the US. Key features listed by the company: 5.1-Channel powerful surround sound Bluetooth for wireless connectivity HDMI 2.1 with HDCP 2.2 (4 in/1 out) 4K Ultra HD support, HDR10, Dolby Vision, Hybrid Log-Gamma and BT.2020 YPAO auto-calibration technology for ideal sound That looks good, and if we look into the details specifications we can see HDMI eARC (part […]

HDMI 2.1 Features Overview

HDMI 2.1 was announced last January with support for up to 10K @ 120 Hz while using Display Stream Compression (DSC) and new 48Gbps cables, as well as other improvements. The HDMI Forum has now released version 2.1 of the HDMI specifications. The detailed specifications are only available to HDMI adopters, but an overview of the specifications can be downloaded by simple mortals. From the table above, we can see HDMI 2.1 adds 7 new features compared to HDMI 2.0b: Dynamic HDR (HDR dynamic metadata) – HDR data (depth, detail, brightness, contrast, and color gamuts) can now be optimized on a scene-by-scene or even a frame-by-frame basis Enhanced audio return channel (eARC) – eARC supports high-bitrate home theater audio formats, object-based audio, uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1, and 32-channel uncompressed audio thanks to up to 37 Mbps audio bandwidth. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) – Syncs up source and display with continually […]

This 7″ HDMI Display with Stand Sells for $37 (Promo)

We’ve already seen cheap 7″ displays that connect to development boards via a flat cable, or – more versatile – via a HDMI cable. Those do not always come with a case, so you’d just let them flat on the desk, or create your own enclosure. This morning, I’ve come across a 7″ HDMI display that is limited to 800×480 resolution, but could be useful thanks to its stand if you need something portable, or have limited space on your desk. Specifications: Display – 7″ screen, 800 x480 resolution (RGB); 16:9 aspect ratio Video Input – 1x HDMI 1.2 input, 1x VGA input (up to 640 x 480), 2x video inputs (PAL/NTSC) Audio – Built-in 1.5W Hi-Fi speaker, 1x audio input User Input – 5 touch buttons, remote control Power Input – 12~24V DC Power Consumption – Less than 5W Dimensions – 17.8 cm x 11.9 cm x 2.1 cm […]
