Samsung Unveils Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge with Curved Display

IFA 2014 tradeshow is just starting today, and will last until the 9th of September, but several companies have made announcements just before the show. One of them is Samsung which announced Gear VR virtual reality kit, Tizen based Gear S smartwatch, as well as two new smarthones, Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge, which will be the subject of this post. U-See2 is a dual-sided screen with a swivel arm that allows the system to operate either back-to-back, or in a side-by-side configuration. One of the sides features a touch screen to allow customer’s involvement. Gechic is a relatively new company offering what it calls “On-Lap monitors”, i.e. light weight monitors that you can easily carry around. TCL and Tencent Launch iCE SCREEN 26″ Mobile Android Display

TCL and Tencent have jointly launched the iCE SCREEN, a “large screen mobile entertainment smart cloud product” featuring a 26″ screen with 1366×768 resolution. The companies expect this new type of smart TV to be used as  large portable screen, a video player, a music and photo album and an high-definition video communications device. You would have thought a device with such a name to use an operating system such as Android “iCE SCREEN” sandwich (sorry I had to),  but Engadget Chinese reports it  to feature a customized version of Android 2.2, and in the press release, the companies referred to it as “independent operating system” that enables internet access to all sort of cloud based applications such as video playback, audio streaming and gaming. NTT Docomo Showcases Smartphone Prototype with See-through Touch Panel

NTT Docomo and Fujitsus have jointly developed a smartphone prototype with a 2.4″ see-through OLED display (QVGA) that has touch sensors both on its front and back sides and NTT Docomo is currently exhibiting the device and showcasing the corresponding new innovative user interface at Wireless Japan 2012, until June 1, 2012, in Tokyo. Nippon Electric Showcases (Quasi) Invisible Glass

Nippon Electric Glass Co Ltd developed a glass substrate that it calls “invisible glass” and exhibited it at FPD International 2011. The company reduced the reflection of light so that light reflections can hardly be seen on the glass substrate. Many visitors at the exhibitions were said to be  gazing at the invisible glass with surprised looks on their faces. Nippon Electric Glass reduced the the reflection of light by forming an anti-reflection film on each of the front and back sides of the glass substrate. In the case of a normal glass substrate, about 92% of incoming light passes through it, and the rest 8% of the light is reflected on it. On the other hand, about 99.5% of incoming light passes through the new glass substrate. So, only about 0.5% of the light is reflected on it. Samsung Demoes a WQXGA (2560×1600) 10.1″ LCD Panel

Samsung developed a 10.1-inch LCD panel that supports 2560 x 1600 resolution and exhibited it at FPD International 2011, which takes place on October 26 to 28, 2011, in Yokohama, Japan. This display using IGZO (In-Ga-Zn-O) TFTs technology. It is targeted to tablets and consume the same amount of power as current 10.1″ 1280×800 (WXGA) displays thanks to “Pentile” technology that uses red, green, blue and white color filters (CFs) as two pixels. The brightness and contrast ratio of the panel are respectively 400cd/m2 and 900:1. Its maximum power consumption is 3.4W. The power consumption of the panel excluding its backlight is just 26mW. See-through OLED & LCD Displays

Samsung Electronics and LG exhibited see-through LCD displays and Samsung Mobile Display see-through  OLED displays at FPD (Flat Panel Display) International 2010/Green Device 2010, Chiba City, Japan. Samsung Electronics brought 2 different displays 23 inch and 46 inch LCD displays while LG Display showcased a 47-inch LCD display. See-through displays use natural light as backlight during the day and use a transparent backlight system attached to the back of the panel during the night. Samsung Mobile Display exhibited 2 OLED displays (14 inch  and 19 inch). The main applications of such displays can be: Digital signage. This is the number 1 application for such displays. You could have a real product at the back and the see-though display at the front displaying some product info and/or promotional videos.
