FiRa “Fine Ranging” UWB technology was introduced a few years ago and is now found in devkits and Apple U1 chip. Makerfabs ESP32 UWB board provides another option with Espressif ESP32-WROVER-32 or ESP32-WROOM-32 WiFi & Bluetooth module combined with a Decawave DW1000 module for precision tracking. Makerfabs explains the board acts like a continuously scanning radar that locks onto another device (called Anchor, since it’s usually in a fixed location) and communicates with it to determine the distance between objects by calculating the time of flight (ToF) between devices, or in other words, the roundtrip time of challenge/response packets. ESP32 UWB board specifications: Wireless modules: WiFi & Bluetooth LE – ESP32-WROVER-32 or ESP32-WROOM-32 module with ESP32 dual-core processor @ 240 MHz UWB – B&T BU01 module based on Decawave DW1000 chip; IEEE802.15.4-2011 UWB compliant wireless transceiver module with a precision of 10cm indoors, a data rate of up to 6.8 […]
$65 dual Wi-Fi HaLow gateway kit extends network range by hundreds of meters
I’m starting to better understand what Wi-Fi HaLow (aka 802.11ah) is for, after seeing a kit with two WiFI HaLow gateways used to wirelessly extend the range of Ethernet connected nodes on the LAN, including IP cameras, to several hundred meters, far more than your typical WiFi repeater, but at the cost of a lower bitrate. Yesterday, I wrote about Halo TD-XPAH, the first easily procurable 802.11ah WiFi HaLow development board I had seen, since the introduction of the new standard in 2014. But I was told another lower-cost HaLow board had been available for a few months on Alibaba, and while I failed to find it on Aliexpress, I discovered a pack with two WiFi HaLow to Ethernet gateway that could easily help extend the range of WiFi nodes like security cameras and selling for about $65 shipped. STK-AH9066 WiFi HaLow gateway specifications: Wireless 802.11ah Wi-Fi HaLow standard 902-930MHz […]
Revopoint POP 2 – A color 3D scanner with 0.1mm accuracy (Crowdfunding)
We’ve previously covered 3D scanners from the low-cost DIY Ciclop kit to more expensive models ($1,000+), but the market offerings have improved as shown by Revopoint POP 2 3D scanner that not only scans shapes but also colors, and is currently offered on Kickstarter for $419 and up. Revopoint POP 2 scanner relies on stereo depth capture with micro-structured light using a “proprietary micro projecting chip” enabling up to 0.1mm accuracy, and the texture scanning mode can add color/texture to 3D models as well. Revopoint POP 2 technical specifications: Technology – Micro-structured light and binocular proprietary technology Single capture – Accuracy: up to 0.1mm, range/area: 210 x 130 mm Point distance – 0.15 mm Working distance – 150 to 400 mm Minimum scan volume – 20 x 20 x 20 mm Scan speed – Up to 10 fps Light source – Class 1 infrared laser (meaning eye safe) Alignment – […]
BusKill USB kill cord protects data on Linux, Windows, Mac OS devices
Data is can be extremely valuable, so Alt Shift designed the BusKill USB kill cord that will automatically execute a user-configurable trigger when your machine is physically separated from you. It can be especially useful to journalists and activists that may get their devices seized by the government, crypto traders, military personnel, or travelers with sensitive data. BusKill is basically just a USB cable attached to the computer via a magnetic breakaway and to the user, for instance to a belt loop, and that will trigger a configurable Python script if the cable is detached while BusKill software is armed. BusKill is made up of four hardware components with a custom magnetic breakaway, a standard USB extension cable, and a USB thumb drive attached to a carabiner via a keyring. I could not find a clear explanation for the USB thumb drive in this system, but I can only assume […]
Unsurv offline – An ESP32 GNSS receiver board with NFC, accelerometer (Crowdfunding)
Unsurv offline is a compact and lightweight board with ESP32 WiSoC, a GNSS receiver, an accelerometer, and NFC capabilities to help developers/users collect and analyze location data in a privacy-friendly way. Unsurv Technologies initially developed the board to better understand offline video surveillance with OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. It does so by using a database of camera locations from the OSM on the SD card, “counts” surveillance cameras as you walk past them, and you can then transmit data via NFC and visualize it on your smartphone. The accelerometer is used to wake up the board from deep sleep upon detection of motion. The company has now made the board open-source and other applications are also possible. Unsurv offline specifications: Wireless modules TTGO T-micro32 WiFi 4 and Bluetooth 4.2 module based on ESP32-PICO-D4 SiP with dual-core ESP32 processor, 4MB FLASH, ceramic antenna U-blox CAM-M8C (aka u-blox M8) module with concurrent reception […]

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum supports Level-3 hardware acceleration (Sponsored)
While it’s possible to tip DVDs without compression, doing so takes a lot of storage space, so most people will transcode DVD to MP4 or other video formats. One program that can help is WinX DVD Ripper that will convert an ISO image or rip a DVD to MP4 with H.264 or HEVC codec, AVI, WMV, FLV, MOV, MPEG, etc…, to save the file a hard drive or NAS, and let you watch it on a computer, HDTV, Android, iPhone, iPad, Xbox One S, PS4/5, etc… WinX DVD Ripper is a free program that works in Windows 10/11 or Mac OS, with a premium version called WinX DVD Ripper Platinum that relies on Level-3 hardware acceleration leveraging NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU acceleration to slash encoding time, as well as support recovery for scratch optical media, 99-title DVDs, and provide editing features. If you own a small collection of DVDs, […]
