Onion Omega2 and Omega2 Plus are MediaTek MT7688 MIPS based WiFi boards for IoT applications that were launched in 2016 for as low as $5. Both boards run OpenWrt (LEDE at the time), and Omega2 Plus included more memory and storage with respectively 128MB RAM, 32MB flash and a micro SD card. But Onion team found out that many users needed more storage space, and they’ve now come up with Omega2 Pro model with the same processor, 128MB RAM, and large 8GB flash considering we’re talking about a board running OpenWrt 18.06 here. Onion Omega2 Pro specifications: Wireless Module – Onion Omega2S+ with SoC – MediaTek MT7688 MIPS processor @ 580 MHz System Memory – 128MB DDR2 RAM Connectivity – 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi 4 Antenna – 2 dBi directional chip antenna (on mainboard) & u.FL connector for external antenna (on-module) Storage – 8 GB eMMC flash USB – […]
Amazon Echo Look Camera Goes for $50 with Intel Atom x5, RealSense Camera SR300
Amazon Echo Look is a smart camera with Alexa Assistant that was launched about 2 years ago for $200, and designed to help you decide if your outfit is a good match, beside taking photo and video selfies with voice commands. Sales may not have matched Amazon expectations (unsurprisingly), and the product is now offered for just $49.99. What may be interesting for CNX Software readers is that Echo Look appears to be a consumer version of AWS DeepLens deep learning video camera for developers ($249), plus some cost savings as well, so there may be some hacking potential here. A teardown video – embedded below – reveals some interesting specifications: SoC – Intel Atom x5-Z8350 quad core Cherry Trail processor @ up to 1.44 GHz System Memory – 1 GB LPDDR3 Storage – 8GB eMMC flash, 16 Mbit SPI flash Camera – Intel RealSense SR300 depth sensing camera + […]

Tis the season so they say
Hey Karl here with a short post…I know everyone on here has their hobbies and thanks to Jean-Luc, and Gearbest I have been able to explore 3D printing for nearly 2 years. I want to express gratitude towards 3 extremely active individuals who help 3D printing, and donate a lot of their time. They help and rarely get showcased on their own. Thinkyhead aka Scott Lahteine You may not know Scott but I’m sure his code is in your 3D printer. Over the past two years I’ve opened a couple issues on Marlin on the Github page and he has helped out both times. I’m writing this today to encourage everyone to contribute to Scott’s Patreon. Marlin is at the cusp of releasing 2.0 which brings a lot a change and a lot of work. One thing that all the printers I have reviewed have in common is Marlin firmware. […]
MediaTek Helio P90’s APU 2.0 Quadruples AI Performance
Mediatek has launched another of their Helio P-series processor. We’ve gotten used to getting incremental improvements when it comes with CPU and GPU performance, but now companies are able to deliver massive improvement for neural network accelerators, and MediaTek Helio P90 can deliver four times (4.6x) the A.I. performance over Helio P60/P70 thanks to its APU 2.0. MediaTek Helio P90 key features & specifications: CPU – 2x Arm Cortex-A75 processors @ 2.2GHz and 6x Arm Cortex-A55 processors @ 2.0GHz using DynamIQ technology GPU – Imagination PowerVR GM 9446 GPU @ 970 MHz NPU – MediaTek APU 2.0 fusion AI architecture with 1127 GMACs (2.25TOPs) MediaTek CorePilot for sustainable peak performance, longer battery life and lower operating temperature System Memory – Up to 8GB of LPDDR4x memory @ 1866MHz Storage – UFS 2.1 Display – Full HD+ (2520×1080) resolution, 21:9 aspect ratio Camera Up to 48MP single camera or 24+16MP dual […]
Steam Link Beta now Available for Raspberry Pi 3 / 3B+
Steam is a digital distribution platform developed by Valve Corporation for purchasing and playing video games that was first launched in 2003 for Windows computer only. Since then Mac OS (2010), Linux / Ubuntu, as well as mobile devices running Android & iOS (2012) have been supported in Steam. Mobile could only be used to browse the storefront, manage games, and access the community. However more recently, the company released Steam Link app that allows players to stream games to their mobile devices, while being rendering on more powerful machines. The good news is that Steam Link (beta) has now been released for Raspberry Pi 3 / 3B + boards. All you need is either board running Raspbian Stretch, and install Steam Link as follows:
1 2 |
curl -#Of http://media.steampowered.com/steamlink/rpi/steamlink_1.0.5_armhf.deb sudo dpkg -i steamlink_1.0.5_armhf.deb |
Once the app is installed launch it in the command line with steamlink, or launch it from the Games menu in the desktop environment. Steam […]
Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is the First 5G Mobile Processor
Most (all?) CNX Software readers already know 5G cellular technology is coming soon, and companies have already announced 5G modems such as Samsung Exynos 5100, MediaTek M70 or Snapdragon X50, some 5G picocells, but AFAIK, so far nobody had officially unveiled 5G mobile processor. Qualcomm has finally announced their Snapdragon 855 5G mobile processor platform codenamed SDM8150, also delivering 3 times improvement for artificial intelligence workloads thanks to its 4th generation AI engine. As usual, Qualcomm has not provided the full details about the processor during the first announcement, but they just listed some highlights: 4G and 5G connectivity with sub-6 GHz and mmWave support 4th Gen AI engine with 3x performance improvement Improved photography and video via Computer Vision ISP, true 4K HDR video capture Ultrasonic fingerprint support Process – 7nm That’s it, so we have to rely on leaks and benchmarks found around the web to get some […]
Xiaomi Mi A2 Review – Part 1: Unboxing, Firmware Update, Antutu
I’ve been using Xiaomi Mi A1 smartphone for well over a year, and during my initial review I was quite satisfied with the phone, and over time I was also pleased to receive regular firmware updates (monthly), and even an update to Android 8.0 and 8.1. Eventually, I found out the camera would be work that well in all situation as you can see from photos in that post, and a few months ago, I broken the display during a cycling trip, and eventually the phone basically died after one year due to an issue with the eMMC flash that become unbearably slow. I intend to use it at least for 18 months, since we can expect firmware update during that time frame. But it was not meant to be, and I was due for a new phone. Xiaomi Mi A2 / A2 Lite smartphones were launched in August, and […]
