Android 5.0 source code was pushed to AOSP less than a week ago, but oma7144, a member of Arctablet CrewRKTablets, already managed to have a preliminary firmware boot on Odys Iron, a tablet powered by Rockchip RK3188. This is still work in progress, and the firmware image has not been made available for download, but it looks promising, and that means Android Lollipop firmware images for Rockchip tablets and mini PCs could be released sooner than I initially expected. Some screenshots taken from the tablet. You can find more screenshots on Arctablet. Via Google+ Mini PC community. Radxa Rock Pro / Lite Development Boards are Now Open Source Hardware
Many projects claim to be “open source hardware” (OSHW) after they’ve released the schematics in PDF format, and source code. But the definition of OSHW has a few more requirements, which is practise means you’ve got to release schematics and PCB layout in the native format, not only in PDF, as well as the gerber files, and the bills of materials. Open Source Hardware can also truly be useful, if you can source the components. and for example, Broadcom BCM2835 processor might be impossible to procure, especially in small quantities, and that makes the Raspberry Pi unsuitable as an open source hardware platform. Existing companies / associations dedicated to OSHW include Arduino, Beagleboard.org, Olimex, etc.., and today Radxa has joined the club by releasing all hardware designs files for Rockchip RK3188 based Radxa Rock Pro and Lite development boards (2014 version) under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Waxberry Pi3 Rockchip RK3188 Development Board Includes a SATA Port
Development boards based on Rockchip RK3188 are a rarity, and until today, I only knew about Radxa Rock boards. Waxberry, a Chinese based company, already made some development boards such as Waxberry Pi2 based on Rockchip RK3066, and recently they’ve launched Waxberry Pi3 development board powered by Rockchip RK3188 processor, with 1 GB RAM, 8 GB flash, a SATA port, expansion headers and more. Waxberry Pi3 (aka WB-RK3188) specifications: SoC – Rockchip RK3188 ARM Cortex-A9 quad core @ 1.6Ghz + Mali-400 MP4 GPU System Memory – 1GB RAM Storage – 8GB NAND Flash (SK Hynix H27UCG8TETR) + micro-SD slot + SATA port Video Output – HDMI, LVDS connector, and AV output (TBC) Connectivity – 10/100M Ethernet port, 802.11b/g/n WiFi Audio I/O – HDMI, AV?, mic IN Camera – 24-pin CSI connector USB – 2x USB 2.0 host ports, 1x micro USB OTG Misc – IR sensor, RTC with battery slot […]
Linux 3.17 Released
Linus Torvalds announced the release of Linux Kernel 3.17 on Sunday: So the past week was fairly calm, and so I have no qualms about releasing 3.17 on the normal schedule (as opposed to the optimistic “maybe I can release it one week early” schedule that was not to be). However, I now have travel coming up – something I hoped to avoid when I was hoping for releasing early. Which means that while 3.17 is out, I’m not going to be merging stuff very actively next week, and the week after that is LinuxCon EU… What that means is that depending on how you want to see it, the 3.18 merge window will either be three weeks, or alternatively just have a rather slow start. I don’t mind getting pull requests starting now (in fact, I have a couple already pending in my inbox), but I likely won’t start processing […]
FVIEW U2 Rockchip RK3188 Media Player with 2GB RAM, Ethernet, and Camera Sells for $53
If you are looking for deals, when new products come to market, older devices are usually sold at a deep discount, and sometimes you also have the advantage of getting a firmware that has gone through various iterations, and that’s more stable than the ones pre-loaded on new devices. We’ve already seen MK813 quad core TV box selling for less than $50, but it lacks Ethernet, and today I’ve been informed of another Rockchip RK3188 device with similar specifications but with an Ethernet port called FVIEW U2 that’s currently selling for $53 on Buyincoins. FVIEW U2: SoC – Rockchip RK3188 quad Cortex-A9 CPU @ 1.6 GHz + Mali-400 MP4 GPU System Memory – 2GB DDR3 Storage – 8GB NAND Flash + SD slot (Up to 32GB) Connectivity 10/100M Ethernet WiFi 802.11 b/g/n with external antenna Bluetooth 3.0 Video Output – HDMI Audio Output – HDMI + optical S/PDIF Video Codecs […]
Rockchip RK3126, RK3128, and “MayBach” Octo-core Cortex A53 Processor Could Be Found in Tablets in Q4 2014
T-chip, the company behind Firefly-RK3288 development board and HPH NT-V6 media player, has sent me their latest company brochure this morning. The brochure mentions the company history since 2005, various tablets solutions they have done over the year, and new and upcoming products. One of the slides particularly caught my attention. RK3288 is pretty popular right now, but I had never heard about RK3126 and RK3128 SoC with four ARM Cortex A7 core with a Mali GPU supporting HEVC decoding up to 1080p resolution. Both processors are manufactured using 40nm technology, so I’d guess these target ultra low cost tablets, which should become available in October and November 2014. Even more interesting is the mention of “MayBach” Tablets. I’ve been told MayBach, which could just be a temporary codename, is an upcoming Rockchip SoC. Based on the information in the slide, it should be an Octa-core Cortex A53 processor with […]
The New Radxa Rock Lite Rockchip RK3188 Development Board Sells for $59
You may have heard about Radxa Rock Lite development board before, so let’s clear up the different versions of the Radxa Rock first. There’s a total of four Radxa Rock models: Radxa Rock (2013) – The original version with 2GB RAM, 8GB NAND Flash, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Radxa Rock Lite (2013) – 1GB RAM, 4GB NAND Flash, and Wi-Fi only Radxa Rock Pro (2014) – An evolution of the Radxa Rock still with 2GB RAM, 8GB NAND flash, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth but adding LVDS and camera interfaces. Radxa Rock Lite (2014) – 1GB RAM, no NAND flash, and Wi-Fi only The fist two versions appear to have been phased out, as they are not listed for sale on Radxa Rock website, and today, I’ll write about Radxa Rock Lite (2014). Radxa Rock Lite (2014) specifications: SoC – Rockchip RK3188 ARM Cortex-A9 quad core @ 1.6Ghz + Mali-400 MP4 GPU System Memory – 1GB […]
