MINIX Technology Limited recently released two new Gemini Lake mini PCs running Windows 10 Pro namely the MINIX NEO J50C-4 actively-cooled mini PC with an Intel Pentium Silver J5005 processor and the MINIX NEO G41V-4 fanless mini PC powered by an Intel Celeron N4100 processor. Whilst each mini PC comes with 64GB of eMMC with pre-installed Windows 10 Pro together with 4GB of RAM they also support the addition of an optional 2280 M.2 drive and the MINIX NEO J50C-4 allows optional memory upgrades. Prior to testing their performance under Ubuntu, I established a comparison baseline by updating Windows to version 1903 and then running my standard set of benchmarking tools first with the default configuration of each mini PC and then repeated having installed the official MINIX 2280 M.2 240GB drives for each device together with adding an extra 4GB RAM to the MINIX NEO J50C-4. The results can […]
Intel Austin Beach is a Modular, Fanless NUC Powered by Intel NUC Compute Elements
Unveiled last May, Intel NUC Compute Element is a family of cards that should cost less than the failed Computer Cards, and easy to handle than your typical computer-on-module. The first Compute Elements showcased at Computex 2019 were powered by a 15-Watt Core U-series processor, and now various models will find their way into Intel Austin Beach fanless NUC with “Chandler Bay” NUC Compute Elements powered by Whiskey Lake processors. Intel Austin Beach specifications: Chandler Bay Compute Element (one or the other, all 15-W Whiskey Lake) BKCM8CCB4R – Intel Celeron 4305U 2-core/2-thread processor with 4GB LPDDR3, 64GB eMMC storage BKCM8PCB4R – Intel Pentium Gold 5405U 2-core/4-thread processor with 4GB LPDDR3, 64GB eMMC storage BKCM8i3CB4N – Intel Core i3-8145U 2-core/4-thread processor with 4GB LPDDR3 BKCM8i5CB8N – Intel Core i5-8265U 4-core/8-thread processor with 8GB LPDDR3 BKCM8v5CB8N – Intel Core i5-8365U 4-core/8-thread vPro processor with 8GB LPDDR3 BKCM8i7CB8N – Intel Core i7-8565U 4-core/8 […]
Hacarus Embedded AI Computing Kit Leverages Sparse Modeling Technology
AI training often requires thousands of samples to become accurate, and it can be costly and time-consuming, for example, if you want to train a model to detect manufacturing defects you’d need to provide images with both defective samples and good samples. Japanese AI experts at Hacarus have been working on a solution called Sparse Modeling which requires about 50 samples or even less for training, and worked with Congatec to provides an embedded AI computing kit leveraging the technology. Sparse Modeling Technology Hacarus does not go into great detail but explains Sparse Modeling technology is using a data modeling approach that focuses on identifying unique characteristics, in a way that humans recognize friends and family without having to look at everything from feet to head. That means algorithms based on Sparse Modeling do not need as much data as traditional AI solutions, leading to much smaller AI footprint suitable […]
MINIX NEO G41V-4 Mini PC Review – Part 2: Windows 10 Pro
MINIX NEO G41V-4 is the latest mini PC from the Hong Kong-based company, and this time they’ve gone fanless with a new design that should allow proper cooling with a large heatsink, plenty of ventilation holes on the top, as well as a dust-resistant meshing to present dust from entering inside the enclosure. I’ve now had time to review the fanless mini PC, and I’ll report my experience with Windows 10 Pro, while Ian did his part with Ubuntu 18.04. Switching to Windows 10 Boot from SSD I had installed the optional 240GB SSD in the first part of the review. It offers an easy way to get more storage and performance, and you don’t need to reinstall Windows 10 Pro since it’s already installed in the SSD. You just need to change some settings in the BIOS as explained in the user manual. To be on the safe side, […]
Some FUJITSU FUTRO Thin Clients are Powered by Intel Gemini Lake Refresh SoC’s
Six new Intel Gemini Lake Refresh processors were just announced a couple of weeks ago, and some of the first systems to feature the processor are part of FUJTISU Thin Client FUTRO family. Three models based on the new processors have been introduced with namely FUTRO S9010, S7010, and S5010 thin clients, all passively-cooled, running either eLux RP or Windows 10 IoT Entreprise, and equipped with SO-DIMM slots, M.2 SSD storage, six USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, and two DisplayPort outputs. Beside the processor, the three thin clients share mostly share the same specifications, especially S5010 and S7010, and S9010 does add a few features: SoC FUTRO S9010 – Intel Pentium Silver J5040 quad-core GLK Refresh processor @ 2.0 GHz (up to 3.2 GHz) with Intel UHD Graphics 605; 10W TDP FUTRO S7010 – Intel Celeron J4125 quad-core GLK Refresh processor @ 2.0 GHz (up to 2.7 GHz) with Intel UHD […]

Intel Gemini Lake Refresh Family Announced with 6 new Processors
Intel Gemini Lake processors were first introduced in 2017, and we’ve gotten some interesting low-power mini PCs as well as SBCs such as ODROID-H2, albeit it was not with troubles since the processors were unavailable for several months. Production of Gemini Lake processors resumed a few months ago, and now the company has announced Gemini Lake Refresh family with 6 new processors. This includes three 6W mobile “N-series” processors… … and three 10W desktop “J-series” processors. Since those are “refresh” processors each new part improves on existing SKU’s with increased frequencies as noted by Liliputing. See the list of Gemini Lake and Gemini Lake Refresh processors below with the latter highlighted in bold. Celeron N4000 – Dual-core processor @ 1.1 GHz (base) /2.6 GHz (boost) Celeron N4020 – Dual-core processors @ 1.1 GHz /2.8 GHz Celeron N4100 – Quad-core processor @ 1.1 GHz /2.4 GHz Celeron N4120 – Quad-core processor […]
Intel Introduces Celeron 5205U & Pentium Gold 6405U Lower Cost Comet Lake-U Processors
Intel officially launched the 10th Generation Comet Lake processor family at the end of September with a choice of Core i3, i5, and i7 processors with 15W TDP (Comet Lake-U) or 4.5~5.5W TDP (Comet Lake-Y) which we’ve so far found in some laptops including some running Linux, and Windows mini laptops among other devices. Intel has now quietly added two new SKU’s to their 15W Comet Lake-U with respectively Intel Celeron 5205U dual-core processor and Pentium Gold 6405U dual-core/quad-thread processor which will come at a lower price than their Core i3/i5/i7 siblings. We’ll find the two new processors at the top of the comparison table below together with previously launched Comet Lake-U processors.
