I wrote about the “Most Affordable WiFi 6 Router Yet“, namely Xiaomi Mi Router AX1800, just two days ago, as it sells for around $60 on Aliexpress and 329 CNY ($46) in China. But the Xiaomi router did not hold the top spot for long, as Honor Router 3 WiFi 6 AX3000 router was just launched for 219 CNY (about $31 US) in China. Honor Router 3 (aka Honor XD20) specifications: SoC – Huawei Gigahome W650 dual-core Cortex-A53 processor @ 1.2GHz. Note: Huawei announcement about the processor shows a quad-core Cortex-A53 @ 1.4 GHz, so there may be a dual-core version too? System Memory – 128MB RAM Storage – 128MB flash Networking Wireless 802.11ax/ac/n/a 2×2 & 802.11ax/n/b/g 2×2 MU-MIMO WiFi 6 Transfer Rate – Up to 2976Mbps with 574 Mbps max @ 2.4GHz, 2402 Mbps max @ 5GHz Antennas – 4x 5dBi external antennas Wired – 4x Gigabit Ethernet ports […]
HeimVision HM241 NVR Review – Part 2: Installation Tips, Video Interface, Android App
A coupled of weeks ago, I received HeimVision HM241 HD NVR kit, and in the first part of the review, I showed the content of the kit, installed an internal 3.5″ hard drive, and did a teardown of both the NVR and one camera. I’ve now had time to test the device for about two weeks. I have plans to install it permanently in another location, but for testing, I temporarily installed the camera for testing in several strategic locations: 3 outdoors, one indoors. Back inside, I connected the NVR device (black box below) to an Ethernet switch for Internet connectivity, a 4K TV to access the user interface, a USB mouse, and the power supply. First Boot and Configuration I was quite surprised during the first boot as I did not have to set up anything and the cameras were automatically detected. The first screen shows QR code for […]

HeimVision HM241 HD NVR Kit Review – Part 1: Unboxing, Teardown and HDD Installation
I’ve reviewed a few solar-powered security cameras in the last year, and from time to time, I’m being asked to review more from time to time, but I asked for a change, and instead, I wanted to look into security network video recorders (NVR). HeimVision offered this opportunity with its HM241 HD NVR Kit which they also call a “wireless security camera system”, and comes with 4 Full HD security cameras besides the NVR itself. In the first part of the review, I’ll check out the hardware, and take the opportunity to install a 3.5″ hard drive, before doing a proper installation, and report my experience about the software in one or two extra articles. HM241 HD NVR Kit Unboxing People working at customs seem to be fond of larger packages, checked it out in details hence the “Opened and Releases” sticker on the package, and I had to pay […]

Huawei Kirin 990 & Samsung Exynos 980 are the First Mobile SoCs with Integrated 5G Modem
[Update: post edited on September 6, 2019 with more details about Kirin 990 5G following the official launch of the processor] We’ve already seen mobile phones and laptops with the latest 5G cellular connectivity such as Samsung Galaxy S10 5G or Lenovo Project Limitless 5G laptop, which internally are designed with an Arm SoC plus a separate 5G modem chip. But as IFA 2019 is about to start, both Huawei and Samsung claim to have introduced the world’s first SoC with an integrated 5G modem with respectively Huawei Kirin 990 and Samsung Exynos 980. We should note that MediaTek is working on their own 5G SoC as well. Samsung Exynos 980 Samsung has already made the announcement so we have Exynos 980 key features and specifications: CPU – Octa-core processor with two Arm Cortex-A77 cores @ 2.2GHz, six Arm Cortex-A55 cores @ 1.8GHz GPU – Mali-G76 MP5 GPU Integrated NPU […]
Google Fuchsia Operating System Gets its own Developer Website
Google has been developing Fuchsia open source operating system based on Zircon kernel for several years. It’s still unclear what’s the end goal. Will it replace Android or/and Chrome OS, ditching the Linux kernel for Zircon in the process? We don’t know, and Google claims its an experimental endeavor. Only the future will tell. We’ve had access to the source code since 2016, but Google has now launched a dedicated developer website for Fuchsia: fuchsia.dev This is year 2019, and Google being a Western company it should not be surprising the first part of the documentation is a Code of Conduct, but there’s also plenty of technical documentation with a glossary, getting started guide, building instructions, an overview of the OS, code samples, and instructions to contribute either by testing or submitting changes to Gerrit. Fuchsia is strictly a 64-bit operating system at this stage with support for Arm64 and […]
Huawei Launches 2U 4-node Taishan X6000 V2 Server with Kunpeng 920 Arm Processor
Back in January, Huawei announced Kunpeng 920 64-core Armv8 server processor as well as three Tianshan servers based on the SoC. But a recent tweet from James Lin, Vice director, Center of HPC, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, claims Huawei launched a 2U 4-node “Taishan” server with Kunpeng 920 (Hi1620) Arm chip a few days ago. That probably means Huawei is now ready to take orders for their new Arm servers. The server pictured above appears to be Taishan X6000 V2 with the following specifications: Form Factor – 2U, 4Node high-density server Server Nodes – Up to 4 XR320 servers with X6000 universal chassis or 4 XA320 V2 servers with X6000 super chassis Power Supply Units 2x 1,500W enhanced hot-swappable AC PSUs for XR320 server nodes 2x 3,000W hot-swappable AC PSUs for XA320 V2 server nodes supporting 1+1 redundancy Power Supply – 100V to 240V AC; 24V DC Fan Modules – […]
