After month of development, alpha releases, beta releases, RC releases, XBMC 13 “Gotham” is finally out. This is the first official release that supports hardware video decoding for ARM and x86 based Android 4.0+ devices. Support is not available for 100% of devices, as for instance, AllWinner A1X/A20 and Amlogic SoCs do not support the standard Android StrageFright or MediaCodec APIs, but most others should. There’s one XBMC Android version for ARM, one for x86. Android hardware video decoding is obviously not the only feature or improvement brought about by XBMC 13. Here are the key ones: Raspberry Pi and Android speed improvements – Overall system performance improvements, but optimizations are said to be particularly noticeable when opening and browsing libraries, loading images and starting videos. AMD Unveils Low Power Mobile “Mullins” APUs for Tablets and Hybrid Laptops
AMD has announced its 3rd-generation Mainstream and Low Power Mobile Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), codenamed codenamed “Beema” and “Mullins,” respectively, featuring four x86 Puma+ CPU, AMD Radeon graphics, and a platform security processor (PSP) with an ARM Cortex-A5 core for ARM TrustZone security. Beema APUs have a TDP between 9W and 15W, whereas Mullins APUs all have less than 5W TDP (2.8W SDP). So I’ll only cover cover Mullins processors in this post, as they may offer an alternative to Intel Bay Trail-T processors. Vivante Unveils Details About GC7000 Series GPU IP Family
Earlier this month, Vivante Corporation has announced several silicon partner integrations (but no names given) of its GC7000 Series GPU IP into SoCs targeting wearables, mobile, automotive, and 4K TV products, and provided some more details about its GC7000 family which supports features such as OpenGL ES 3.1 API, and hardware TS/GS/CS (tessellation / geometry / compute shader) extensions for Android. Intel Announces its First “Bay Trail” Fanless NUC Kit
Intel already announced a Bay Trail NUC selling for $140 earlier this year, but despite the low power dissipation (7.5W TDP) of the Intel N2820 processor, it requires a fan for cooling. The company has now unveiled its first fanless mini PC with Intel NUC Kit DE3815TYKHE powered by Intel Atom E3815 Bay Trail-I processor with 5W TDP. This NUC is destined for industrial and enterprise solutions such as digital signage, point-of-sales, kiosks, and thin clients. Microsoft Announces Intel Shark Cove Windows Development Board
There are now plenty of affordable ARM based Android and Linux development board which you can use to develop apps that access hardware drivers, and a few Intel based ones have also started to pop-up such as Galileo and Minnowboard MAX. The problem, for Microsoft, is that none of them currently support Windows. You could always use a PC to develop Windows apps, but this may become a problem once you start dealing with embedded devices and want to access undiscoverable buses such as GPIOs, serial interfaces and so on, as PCs are also protected by secure boot which limits developing and testing third-party drivers. Intel To Launch Quad Core Z37x5 Atom Bay Trail-T SoCs
CPU World reports Intel is preparing to launch at least 9 new Bay Trail-T processors for Android and Windows 8.1 tablets. The new processors will be part of Atom Z37x5 product line, which offers up to 16% better graphics performance. All SoCs are built on Silvermont (22nm) microarchitecture, come with 4 CPU cores, 2 MB L2 cache, and Ivy Bridge-based GPUs. The most powerful will be Z3795 with four CPU cores clocked at 1.6 GHz, with burst speeds reaching up to 2.39 GHz, a GPU clocked between 311 and 778 MHz, and support for up to 4GB RAM. Z3735E is the processor with the weakest specs, and must be the cheapest of the lots. It’s clocked at 1.33 GHz (Turbo: 1.83 GHz) and support a mere 1GB RAM max.
