Tizen Developer Conference 2013 Presentation Slides, Audio Recording and Videos Are Now Available

The Tizen Developer Conference took place in San Fransisco, on May 22-24, 2013. We’e already seen a few Tizen demos from the conference, but slides and media files (mostly audio, but also some videos) are now available for keynotes and technical presentations. Systena Tizen Tablet Hands-on Video

Systena, a Japanese company, is currently developing a Tizen tablet with a quad core Cortex A9 processor at 1.4Ghz, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. The tablet features a 10.1″display (1920×1080), supports 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and comes with a microSD card slot, as well as a 2MP rear camera and 0.3Mp front camera. Tizen Indonesia got a prototype of the tablet, and give it a try in the video below (no audio). We can see the boot, lock screen and gallery application. The system does not seem very fluid at this stage of development, but hopefully Tizen will be optimized for better performance before the final release. The system currently runs Tizen 2.0, but the company plans to upgrade to Tizen 2.1 for the developer version of the device, before selling the device to the general public. Tuxera FAT Embedded Boasts Faster and Better FAT32 Implementation for Embedded Linux and Android

Tuxera has announced their “FAT Embedded” implementation of the FAT file system specifically optimized for embedded Linux and Android. The company claims their commercial solution delivers much faster data transfers than competing FAT implementations. Beside providing better performance, it also includes features such as fail-safe operation, and lower power consumption. They’ve benchmarked different file systems including Tuxera FAT Embedded with different I/O buffer sizes on two embedded hardware: Marvell 6192 @ 800 MHz with 512 MB RAM and a 120 GB Corsair Force GT SSD (SATA 3) The write speed of Tuxera exFAT and FAT appears to clearly outperform even ext-4 in this particular system. As a side note, I also evaluated 2 embedded systems based on the same low-end CPU: one using NTFS-3G, and the other Tuxera NTFS back in 2010, and there’s was a massive performance difference at the time. Tizen Shows Up in Smartphones, Ultrabooks, and Cars

I’ve seen a lot of tweets about Tizen in the last fews days, mainly because Tizen Conference 2013 just took place. First there’s been Tizen 2.1 SDK release, and few demos have surfaced, showcasing Tizen in their target devices: smartphones, tablets,smart TVs, laptops, and In-vehicle infotainment devices. Beside all the work done, the companies behind the project will also offer $4 million to developers who publish apps on Tizen store. There will be 9 categories. The best 3 games will get $200,000 each, and the best apps in the other 6 categories $120,000 each. Tizen App Challenge will start on June 3, 2013, and you can see details for this program here. Tizen 2.0 SDK and Source Code (Magnolia) Release

Tizen developers have just announced Tizen 2.0 source code and SDK release. This release includes many new features and improvements over Tizen 1.0 released in April. Tizen Launches Development Unit Program for Developers

The Tizen development team showcased and gave away Tizen development hardware at the Tizen Conference in May, which are similar to the Samsung Galaxy S2. If you were not present, do not despair as Tizen has just announced the launch of a Development unit program in order to make it easier for qualified developers to find available development hardware running Tizen. The 30 units currently available are only useful for Tizen developers, since they do not contain all of the features that you would expect to see in a consumer device and are only intended to developers who are building applications for Tizen. If you are a developer willing to working on Tizen Apps, you can apply for this batch until June 29 at 11:59 pm PST by filling the application form (After logging-in which appears to be impossible right now). Tizen OS Running on Samsung Smartphone Reference Design (Video)

After Tizen 1.0 (codenamed Larkspur) release last week, a Samsung prototype was showcased at the Tizen Developer Conference on May 7-9 in San Francisco. The Samsung prototype fearures a 4.65 inch 1280 x 720p HD Super AMOLED display and runs Tizen on an Exyons? 1.2 Ghz dual core Cortex A9 chip with 1 GB of RAM. Vaibhav Sharma of The Handheld Blog, who has tried this developers’ reference design at the conference, shows us the main menu (similar to TouchWiz), system settings, the web browser (which scores 408 on HTML5Test.com), the picture gallery, the music player, youtube video playback etc… and it looks pretty smooth as shown in the hands-on video below. This is just a prototype, so performance will most likely be further improved once a Tizen smartphone is made available to the general public.
