Asus Chromebit Chrome OS TV Stick to Sell for Less than $100
Google has just announced Rockchip RK3288 Chromebooks, and also quickly mentioned Chrombit Chrome OS dongle, but with very few details. However, several large US blogs like Engadget and Gizmodo got a sample (mock-up?), and shared more details. So now we have the technical specifications of the dongle, which unsurprisingly also feature RK3288 processor: SoC – Rockchip RK3288-C quad core Cortex A17 processor with ARM Mali-T764 GPU. System Memory – 2 GB DDR3L SDRAM Storage – 16 GB eMMC Flash Storage Video Output – HDMI Connectivity – Dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 2×2 (MIMO) a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 USB – 1x USB 2.0 host port, 1x micro USB OTG port Power – 5V via micro USB port Dimensions – N/A Weight – N/A It’s quite likely the Rockchip processor won’t run at full speed, at least not for a long period of time, as it’s likely to overheat in such small form factor, […]
$149 Rockchip RK3288 Chromebooks by Haier and HiSense Launched
Just ten days ago, Asus C201 Chromebook powered by Rockchip RK3288 processor was spotted on a product catalog. Today, Google unveiled two Rockchip Chromebooks, except the Asus Chromebook is not there yet, but instead Haier Chromebook 11 HR-116R and Hisense Chromebook both available for pre-order for $149 respectively on Amazon US and Walmart. Both laptops have very similar specifications: SoC – Rockchip RK3288-C quad core Cortex A17 processor @ 1.8 GHz with ARM Mali-T764 GPU. (Wallmart claims a 2.5GHZ processor frequency, but this has to be an error). System Memory – 2 GB DDR3L SDRAM Storage – 16 GB eMMC Flash Storage + micro SD slot + 100GB Google drive storage, free for 2 years Display – 11.6” HD wide screen LED-backlit display; 1366 x 768 resolution Video Output – HDMI Audio – HDMI, stereo speakers, headphone jack, Connectivity – Dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 2×2 (MIMO) a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 USB […]
Tegra X1 Chromebooks Likely in the Works
When Nvidia announced Tegra X1 processor, the company’s main focus appeared to be the automotive market as it introduced Drive PX and CX board for this very market. Since then, Tegra X1 based SHIELD console was unveiled, and I’ve been informed some development activity related to Tegra X1 (Model: Tegra210 / T210) was taking place in Chromium and especially Coreboot source code. There appears to be two hardware platforms based on Tegra X1: smaug and foster which could end-up being Chromebooks or Chromeboxes likely with 4GB RAM. Thanks to David for the information. Asus C201 Chromebook to be Powered by Rockchip RK3288 Processor
If you’ve been following this blog, you should know that Rockchip is working with Google on Chrome OS, so it was just a matter of time before a Rockchip powered Chromebook or Chromebox sees the light of the day. The first Rockchip RK3288 chromebook might end up being Asus C201 Chromebook with apparently a custom version of the Cortex A17 processor dubbed Rk3288-C, as OMG Chrome found out in Troxell’s 2015 brochure for K-12 education. So far we only know a few details about the specifications: SoC – Rockchip RK3288-C quad core Cortex A17 processor @ up to 1.8GHz System Memory – 2 to 4 GB DDR3 Storage – 16GB eMMC Display – 11.6″ display with 1366×768 resolution Webcam – VGA resolution The exact model name should be C201PA. Rockchip RK3288 should provide performance quite similar, and in some cases even better, to Intel Atom Z3735F, except possible when it comes […]
Chromium OS Image for PopMetal Rockchip RK3288 Development Board
We’ve been teased about Chromium OS on Rockchip RK3288 about a year ago, and RK3288 kernel and Chromium overlay have also been available for nearly a year, but AFAIK there hasn’t been any Chromium OS firmware for any particurlar hardware, until yesterday, where Chipspark released a Chromium OS image for their PopMetal board. I haven’t been able to download the file yet, because the download speed is terrible, but you could download chromium_image.tar.gz to have a look. That could mean Rockchip RK3288 based Chrome OS devices may not be so far off now. PopMetal Rockchip RK3288 Development Board Features Multiple Display Interfaces (HDMI, VGA ,eDP, LVDS, MIPI), GPS and NFC Connectivity
Up to now, we’ve had mainly two development boards based on Rockchip RK3288 Cortex A17 processor: Firefly-RK3288 is a low cost development board powered by Rockchip RK3288 processor selling for as low as $140 shipped, and Radxa Rock 2, a more professional and expansive solution with dual Ethernet, 3G modem and so on. A third RK3288 board has now surfaced which offers a middle ground between Firefly and Radxa boards. PopMetal development board comes with 2GB RAM, 8GB eMMC, 5 video outputs / display interfaces namely HDMI, VGA, embedded DisplayPort (eDP), LVDS, and MIPI DSI, as well as the usual Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity, complemented with GPS and NFC. PopMetal technical specifications: SoC – Rockchip RK3288 quad core ARM Cortex-A17 processor @ 1.8Ghz with ARM Mali-T764 GPU with support for OpenGL ES1.1/2.0/3.0, OpenVG 1.1, OpenCL 1.1, DirectX 11 System memory – 2GB DDR3 Storage – 8 GB eMMC, […]
The New HP Chromebook 14 Features Nvidia Tegra K1 SoC
With HP SlateBook 14, Hewlett Packard already had a Tegra (4) based notebook with a 14″ display, but running Android 4.3, which may not be the best OS on such device. The company has now announced their new Chromebook 14 featuring an Nvidia Tegra K1 processor, 2 to 4GB RAM, and 16GB eMMC or 32GB M.2 SSD. The previous version of HP Chromebook 14 was based on Intel Celeron 2955U. HP Chromebook 14 specifications: SoC- Nvidia Tegra K1 quad core Cortex A15 processor with Kepler GK20A GPU System Memory – 2 to 4 GB DDR3L @ 1600MHz depending on model Storage – 16GB eMMC, or 32 GB M.2 SSD, and 100GB Google Drive Storage Display – 14″ display (1080p according to press release, 1366×768 according to product page).
