Android STB – WebTube HD

Here’s another Android Set-top-box that may come to the market soon. I do not have much information on this product, except it’s made by mnex – a Korean company. (Update: although the youtube video says otherwise, the design seems to belong to Innodigital (See Webtube HD details). The video below shows it supports Android web browser, Youtube, Google maps and interestingly an application market especially designed for TV (TV Application Market). Apparently, they control the box with a normal remote control, no track ball or touch pad, nor do they seem to have support for wireless mouse and/or keyboard. The demo looks good, although a bit sluggish. Yet Another Android Tablet by Foxconn

Here’s a video of another Android tablet, a 10″ tablet made by Foxconn, aka Hon Hai Precision Industry Company. There seems to be quite a few tablets coming on the market (See Allgo Tablet) that should keep the prices down. IPAD Killer – Allgo Android Tablet

Ok, the title is a bit over the top but the Allgo tablet reference design running android would only cost around 35 USD to manufacture (15 dollars for the board, 15 dollars for the touch screen display and 5 dollars for the battery). So you’d be able to browse the web, read e-books, flicker through your pictures and access a wide range of applications through Google app store for less than 100 USD (retail) compared to  the IPAD retail price of 499 USD that would seem like a bargain even though the performance is not as good as the IPAD (but still acceptable) as you can see in the video below. ARM-based Android Set-Top-Box

Last month, I posted a blog entry about demo featuring Sigma Designs Android STB that was shown at CeBit last January. AFAIK this is still being developed and there is still no Android STB products based on Sigma Designs Chips that can be purchased. Earlier this month, another company Webia Technologies demo’ed an Android STB (HDMI 1080p – ARM 11) whose factory price would be 50 USD, which is well below the price of a similar Sigma Designs STB based on SMP8640 or SMP8650 series. They also showed a smaller box that can support 720p and selling for 25 USD (Factory price, not retail price). You can see the demo below showing both set-top-boxes. Interestingly enough, I was unable to find Webia Technologies website or other previous news about this company. All I found is Webia Technologies is supposedly registered in Hong Kong. Update: After searching which ARM-based solution may […]

Resources for SMP865x SMP8652 SMP8653 SMP8654 SMP8655 SMP8656

Less than a year ago, Sigma Designs released the SMP8652, a secure media processor “designed to provide the optimal price/performance configuration for thin client applications, which include IPTV set-top boxes, digital media adapters, and hybrid cable/IP thin clients.” SMP8652 provides cost savings compared to the SMP863X series, due the integration of functions such as Ethernet and USB – that allowed them to skip PCI support in their new chip – and better performance (500Mhz MIPS24K CPU). SMP8650 series processors also use the MRUA and DCCHD SDK that need to be purchased as for the previous generation of chips. [ad#Google Adsense – Wide Banner] You can also purchase more SDK from Sigma for SMP8652: Adobe Flash Lite Qt/Webkit Integration Java VM Some DRM SDK (e.g. Microsoft DRM)… As for SMP8630 series, SMP86520 series processors also have a MMU (as most of new chips nowadays) so that you won’t come across the […]

Installing Android in your PC

In case you want to checkout Android but do not have any devices to do so, you can simply install it in your PC. In this blog entry I’ll show how to install Android in VirtualBox with a computer running Windows XP, but this could be installed in any OS supported by VirtualBox or other virtual machine (e.g. VMWare). If you don’t have it yet,  download VirtualBox for your OS and install it first. The first thing is to download Android-x86 ISO file. While it is downloading you can add a new Virtual Machine to VirtualBox. After you click on the “New” icon, click on Next  and enter your machine name. e.g. Android, and select the Operating System:  Linux and version: Other Linux. Click on next to select the memory size: Click on next to select to create a new hard disk: Then basically select Next for the following steps […]
