ARM Unveils Mali-T720 and Mali-T760 GPUs
ARM has recently announced two new Mali GPUs: Mali-T760 for high-end smartphones and tablets, and Mali-T720 for entry-level devices, but with better performance and energy performance compared to previous cost-optimized Mali GPUs, as well as OpenGL ES 3.0 support. These new GPUs have already been licensed by companies such as MediaTek, Rockchip, Samsung and LG Electronics. Mali-T760 GPU ARM lists the key benefits and features of the ARM Mali-T760 GPU as follows: An increase in energy efficiency and performance of approximately 400 percent over the ARM Mali-T604 GPU; Scaling to 16 shader cores, which doubles the previous generation, plus an increase in both performance per shader core and overall performance; Reduction of internal and SoC bandwidth utilization, significantly reducing energy consumption, enabled by ARM Frame Buffer Compression (AFBC), and Smart Composition, delivering more than 50 percent reduction in total memory bandwidth utilization; Simplified implementation through reduced wire count and […]

Olimex Announces OLIMEXINO-NANO, a Tiny Arduino Leonardo Compatible Board
Last month, I wrote about Microduino, a tiny Arduino compatible board about the size of a coin. Olimex has also being working on their own tiny version of the Arduino board, OLIMEXINO-NANO, slightly larger than Microduino (30x30mm vs 25.4×27.94mm) but also featuring the UEXT connector which is an advantage if your own or plan to use UEXT expansion boards, but it could be an inconvenience if you don’t, as the connector is a little bulky. Here are the specs of the board: MCU – Atmel ATMega32U4 processor (Leonardo compatible) with 2.5KB RAM, 32KB flash memory, and 1KB EEPROM. Storage (external) – microSD card connector for data logging on SD-card USB – micro USB connector for programming and power supply when debugging Misc – RESET button, USER button, 2x status LEDs Expansion Connectors: UEXT connector for RF, Zigbee, Ethernet, RELAY, RGB LED, etc UEXT modules Connector 14 pin 0.05″ Connector 20 […]
PicUntu 4.5 Brings Ubuntu 13.04 to RK3188 mini PCs
At the beginning of the year, PicUntu had been released for Rk3066 HDMI TV sticks, but as quad core devices based on RK3188 became popular, work started as soon as the source code was available, and a preliminary version of Linux ran on some RK3188 devices in June. After 4 more months of development an installer for PicUntu 4.5 has been released to allow users to run a customized version of Ubuntu 13.04 on RK3188 HDMI TV sticks or set-top boxes such as T428 or Rikomagic MK802 IV. The installation procedure appears to be easier than earlier version, as there’s only one installer file (247 MB), and you can complete the installation to the NAND flash of your device with just 4 clicks. PicUnutu runs xfce4 desktop environment, supports more than 200 drivers, multiple file systems (nfs, ntfs, cramfs, cifsutils, smb…), lots of different USB devices, serial devices, GPS devices, […]
