ASUS PN50 – The World’s First AMD Ryzen 4000U Mini PC

AMD Ryzen 4000-U Series family was announced in January with the 15W processors targetting ultra-thin laptops. It’s already been found in laptops and the first reviews of Acer Swift 3 were positive with the laptop being slim, fast, and offering long battery life.

But I had yet to see an AMD Ryzen 4000U mini PC until today, with ASUS PN50 mini PC shipping with a choice of five processors from AMD Ryzen 3 4300U to Ryzen 7 4800U, and a design identical to the company’s PN60 mini PC powered by Intel Kaby Lake Refresh processors.

AMD Ryzen 4000U Mini PCSince this is a barebone mini PC, no operating system is specified, but it’s clear Windows 10 will work after drivers installation, while Linux distributions may have to be tested first.

this DisplayPort in place of VGA socket looks ridiculous 😀

Nice specs otherwise, although I would prefer something with space for some more storage (2*SATA or something)

How AMD doesn’t have fanless/passive cooling mobile/laptop CPU on 7nm but Intel has many on 14nm ?

Now that 8k video is becoming popular, having a 8 core htpc sounds reasonable. The fastest setup here is comparable to intel 8700k which is an outdated low perf desktop not suitable for gaming or more advanced stuff.

Judging by the logos on the housing, both USB-C ports should also support DP alt mode.

Does anyone know if we can put in a small form factor graphics card, in case the native Radeon graphics is undesirable?

Thanks in advance.

Looks good but too expensive for mass sales: now nick-nack object for snobs, like Intel’s NUCs.

I was thinking along the same lines.

I think that many have been waiting for AMD to enter the MiniPC and NUC market with specs that rival Intel at a price that seriously threatens but there is nothing here that make me go wow and so the tried and trusted Intel platform will likely rule for a while yet.

A missed opportunity but not so surprising really when you consider how dominant Intel has been for such a long time.
