Xiaomi Smart Multi-mode Gateway Supports Zigbee 3.0, WiFi, Bluetooth, and Bluetooth Mesh

Xiaomi has introduced several inexpensive home automation products over the years, often under their Mijia brands with for example a WiFi to IR blaster, a Zigbee & WiFi smart home kit, a smart door lock, or a smart speaker among other products.

Recently, the company has launched the Xiaomi Smart Multi-mode Gateway that supports Zigbee 3.0, WiFi, Bluetooth, and Bluetooth Mesh.

Xiaomi Mijia Smart Multi-Mode Gateway

Xiaomi Mijia Smart Multi-mode Gateway (model ZNDMWG03LM) key features and specifications:

  • Connectivity
    • ZigBee2.0 / ZigBee3.0
    • 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 2×2 MIMO
    • Bluetooth & Bluetooth Mesh
    • Compatible with Apple Homekit
    • Max range – 200 meters (Line-of-Sight)
    • Up to 32 devices
  • Power Supply – 5V/1A
  • Dimensions – 90x25mm
  • Temperature Range – -5-50
  • Humidity – 0%-95%RH, non-condensing

The gateway can be controlled via Mi Home app running on  Android 5.0 or iOS 12.0 smartphones. It’s compatible with Apple Homekit, Xiaomi Mi AI speaker, and the earlier Zigbee/WiFi kit with Aqara gateway and Zigbee sensors and sockets.

I initially thought it might an ESP32 + Zigbee design based on the description, but since WiFi 2×2 MIMO is supported it has to be another solution, and I have yet to see any teardowns.

Xiaomi Mijia Smart Multi-mode Gateway ships with a power supply, a cable, and a user’s manual in Chinese. It’s sold for under $30 on sites such as Banggood, GeekBuying, and others.

Nice, will this work with Philips Hue devices and Ikea Trådfri? And will i be able to omit buying their gateways?

If it’s based on the same weird Cortex A7 SoC as some other xiaomi products this might turn into a nice little platform for messing with the protocols it supports. Alas I couldn’t find any fcc or otherwise certification internal photos.

I’d be very wary of putting a Xiaomi device on my network, I would have to fully segregate it and still run Wireshark to sniff the behavior before reassuring myself it’s not doing anything nefarious.

I know most of the electronics in my house are Chinese based but something about this company sets of my security.

I’m still not decided to buy any ready-made ZigBee gw due to security.
But what could go wrong with dedicated VLAN without routing to Internet?

Smart thinking.

Except that it requires internet access to use the Mi Home app.

Will it act as a repeater with Smartthings hub?

Assume not as no other of-the-shelf gateways I know of act as repeaters for other manufacturers hubs.

I just use Zigbee mains-plugs and Z-Wave -mains plugs as repeaters.

Ikea also has a cheap signal repeater for Zigbee in thier TRÅDFRI series that double as a USB changer.

Cloud-mode by default I assume but wonder if they allow enabling a local-mode only or it would need to be hacked to do that?

Did they specify which versions of Bluetooth and Bluetooth Mesh specifications are supported?

Regardless it is great to see more inexpensive gateways support Zigbee 3.0 and Bluetooth, however, I would personally be willing to pay a premium price for a model that also supported Z-Wave as well.

So far I’m not able to find any way to enable local mode. Tried all old methods via Android or iOS apps with no luck 🙁 While this is very good hardware by locking it down to only xiaomi server it is somewhat limiting.

Thanks for this article !

Some questions :

1 – Only 32 devices as the old one ? Where can we find the official specs ?
2 – An api will be available ?
3 – xiaomi is in the new project « connected home over ip » ?
