AOMedia AV1 open, royalty-free video codec has come a long way since it was first introduced in 2016, and we’ve recently seen AV1 hardware video decoding integrated into higher-end STB SoCs such as Broadcom BCM7218X or Realtek RTD1311/RTD1319 processors.
But AV1 codec is also coming to lower-cost media processors as shown by Amlogic 2020 roadmap below.
We should expect at least three new AV1 capable processors in 2020.
Amlogic S905X4
Specifications:
- CPU – Quad-core Arm Cortex-A55 processor
- GPU Arm Mali-G31MP2
- Video
- 4Kp75 H.265, VP9, AVS2
- 4Kp120 AV1
- HDR support
- Smart Audio
- Voice Activity Detector (VAD)
- Asynchronous Sample Rate conversion (ASRC)
- Equalizer (EQ)
- Dynamic Range Compression (DRC)
- 2x DSP for audio front end (AFE) and wake word engine (WWE)
Amlogic S905X4 looks like an update to Amlogic S905X3 with AV1 codec support, and maybe extra audio features.
Amlogic S908X
We’ve previously seen Rockchip RK3588 with Cortex-A76 / A55 cores, 8K video output and decoding support, as well as 4K encoding, is coming in 2020. Amlogic S908X should compete directly with the Rockchip, as will we only know it will be equipped with “next-generation CPU & GPU” it will support 8Kp60 AV1 and AVS 3.0 Chinese video codec decoding, and 8Kp60 video output via HDMI 2.1 video interface. The processor will also support 64-bit DDR RAM.
Amlogic S805X2
We have pretty limited information about this part, as it will feature next-generation CPU and GPU cores as well as a Full HD AV1 video decoder. That should be the cheaper option to get an AV1 capable TV box or board, but you won’t get 4K, only up to 1080p.

Im wondering if allwinner will wake up from its lethargy any time soon
Allwinner has a roadmap too, but they did not provide many details so far. Those are tablet SoCs however.
You mean no news since https://www.cnx-software.com/2019/04/28/allwinner-tablet-soc-roadmap-2019-2020/ ?
Their news only talks about AI and A7, A40i
Yes, I thought I had included the link but apparently not.
The new Allwinner A200 / A300 processors should hopefully come with Cortex-A7x. I still cannot find any details, nor products based on those.
Anyone worth the salt has already left Allwinner.
Hmmmmmm…
any clue where they went to?
I just know one example. Tom Cubie started his own company and now sells boards based on Rockchip processors.
Marketing people I had contact with (Eva Wu, and Ben El) also left, but I don’t where they went.
Ben went to Next Thing Co. but after that, I don’t know.
I can see the stock has been fairly stable, even going up a bit in the last year. But still quite lower than the next few weeks after the IPO. Is it that bad?
Amlogic S928X is also in the works. Not many details so far:
Next gen CPU and GPU
8Kp60 AV1/AVS3 decoder, 8Kp30 VP9/H.265/AVS2 decoder
8Kp60 HDMI 2.1 TX
64-bit DDR
It looks so similar to S908X. They may just have changed the name to S928X.
2021 is almost over. Where are all these new chips?
S805X2 and S905X4 have been around for a little while, but indeed no news about S908X and S928X. Instead, we got A311D2 in the meantime.
I got a new blurry roadmap. It looks like S928X might launch in Q3 2022.
Bear in mind Amlogic is not just TV box, TV, Signage SoC designer anymore. Also despite the long lead times and covid. Where has been the need for the next SoC. MediaTek etc Got 2.6 GHz turbo out of 20nm fab, why are A55 12nm, 20nm not reaching 2.6 GHz? Add in, faster memory and or storage. But you have to make cost, use maths work.
The Q3 2022 launch appears to be confirmed with SEI Robotics and Skyworth showcasing 8K TV boxes with an S928X processor at IBC 2022.
