I was quite disappointed when I wrote Zidoo X1 review, as Zidoo provided decent firmware with their Zidoo X9 recorder (albeit with some caveats), but Zidoo X1 with firmware 1.05 was a disaster while playing videos in Kodi either from the network or a USB hard drive, as even most H.264 videos could not play smoothly… I recommended prospective buyers to skip the box for now, as Kodi was not acceptable when Zidoo’s ZDCodec hardware decoding implementation was enabled. But the developers have quickly worked to fix critical bugs in Kodi, and provided a test APK that indeed fixed H.265, H.264, and MPEG2 videos, and improved greatly 4K video playback in Kodi with ZDcodec implementation.
Since then, they’ve also fixed some other playback issues for video using VC1 codec, and released firmware 1.0.7 with the following changes:
- Kodi
- Fixed choppy video problems with online videos, such as YouTube
- Fixed choppy video issues with some videos that are in samba and other network storage disk
- Enhanced support for VC1 video format
- Solved black screen problem for large resolution (>480p) WMV3 format video
- Improved video rendering efficiency, and other bugs
- System
- The navigation bar is hidden by default
- Fixed incompletely close problem of HDMI CEC
- Fixed boot failure due to DRM under some circumstances
- Fixed IR Remote controller doesn’t work under some circumstances
- APK
- Added application market for appsgo
- System apk is full-screen

Maybe.
Kodi in this version has shuttering problems.
Only test version it’s working ok.
You can test some video files.
@me
I don’t have time to try the firmware. I assumed they put the right version of Kodi inside as per the Changelog.
But one guy reports shuttering just like in the Kodi version I got with firmware 1.0.5.
Zidoo’s ZDCodec hardware decoding implementation for Kodi still violates GPL as far as I know, here was some dicussion about on the Kodi forum but no news from Zidoo’s represenatives on when and if the source code will be released or if they will just confinue to violate the GPL.
Hi cnxsoft:
Is there anyway you know about converting a nand image for this Zidoo to a single SD image (.img) that can runs on Orange pi 2 mini (Or Orange pi 2) ? since both have the same processor.
@Abdullbasit
I think I did something similar with Allwinner A10 devices, so there must be a way, but I’m not sure how to do that anymore.
Check Orange pi forums, or maybe better, linux-sunxi Wiki.
why do people keep talking about “violates GPL” whats the good and bad about violating GPL.
what is GPL??
@Adem
GPL = General Public License.
It’s a license often used by open source project, whose terms explicit say that if you modify the code, and release a binary, you also need to provide the source code.
Many companies simply don’t, and just leverage open source code, without publishing the code, which violates the license (and the law).
