Waveshare ESP32-P4-NANO board offers Ethernet, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5, MIPI display and camera interfaces, GPIO headers

Waveshare ESP32-P4-NANO is the first third-party ESP32-P4 RISC-V board we’ve seen and it follows the launch of the Espressif Systems’ ESP32-P4-Function-EV-Board devkit introduced this summer.

While the ESP32-P4 is a general-purpose microcontroller, the ESP32-P4-NANO board still implements wireless connectivity through an ESP32-C6 WiFI 6 and Bluetooth LE 5.4 module and offers a range of interfaces such as an Ethernet RJ45 port with optional PoE, MIPI DSI and CSI interfaces, a USB Type-A OTG port, and GPIO headers for expansion.

ESP32-P4-NANO pinout diagram

Waveshare has recently made it a habit of releasing new hardware without any proper documentation. The ESP32-P4-NANO is not different as the wiki page is currently empty… So at this time, we can assume the ESP32-P4 board only works with the ESP-IDF framework, although we recently wrote about a PlatformIO fork working with ESP32-P4. The main benefits of the board are that it is quite smaller and cheaper than the ESP32-P4-Function-EV-Board measuring 82.5 x 74 mm.

Waveshare sells the ESP32-P4-NANO on AliExpress for $19.79 to $96.29 depending on options and it should soon become available on the company’s Amazon store. The cheapest price is for the basic with the board and speaker, but Waveshare offers various kits up to the P4-NANO-KIT-D with the board, a speaker, a Raspberry Pi camera, a 10.1-inch touchscreen display, a PoE module, and required cables. Alternatively, you can also find all of the kits on the Waveshare online store.

I just received my ESP32-P4-NANO-KIT-D in today.
Sadly, this is one of those cases where sales got ahead of engineering.
There is no firmware to download to make any of it work, and it was not preloaded with any. So as of right now its just a paper weight.

You can use ESP-IDF with it like any other ESP32 dev board.

Is there anything more pointless than giving the screen size without the resolution? In my experience this usually is done when the resolution is abysmal for the given size. This is not the only site doing this but it’s always a huge red flag.

Does it have debugging over USB?

The description says Dual core, but isn’t the C6 a single core?, or do they count the Low-Power core twice?

Edit: Ah i see there is a second ESP32-P4 chip that is dual core.

The PoE possibility on a compact board is IMHO very interesting.
Small intercom for example (including a Thread/ZigBee repeater :-)), where the P4 is powerful enough.

It packs a lot features for a reasonable price. And we can expect good support from Espressif, it’s tempting.

The wiki is not empty anymore.

As a side note, globaly, compared to the Waveshare’s wiki as it was a couple of years ago, it’s night and day.

This device has the same footprint and makes use of the same peripherals as the Luckfox Pico Ultra. In fact the PoE module appears to have the Luckfox logo.

Yes indeed. Good catch.
The “out of the box” software support by Espressif would be for me the main criteria for making a choice between them.

The connection to the ESP32C6 is done with the UART only.
The ESP32P4 dev kit is connected using SDIO.
