ESP32-S3 1.69-inch touch display features 6-axis IMU, RTC, UART, and more

The Waveshare ESP32-S3 1.69-inch touch display is a development board that uses an ESP32-S3 as the main controller. The board features a 240×280 touchscreen LCD that supports 262K colors and is equipped with an accelerometer, gyroscope, RTC, battery management IC, and a USB-C port for programming and power.

Previously we wrote about the Waveshare ESP32-S3-LCD-1.28 1.28-inch fully rounded LCD screen that is also built around an ESP32-S3 MCU, and we have also recently written about the similar-looking Waveshare 1.69-inch IPS touch LCD with no onboard MCU that is meant to connect to Raspberry Pi, ESP32-S3, Raspberry Pi Pico, Arduino, STM32, and other boards with I2C or SPI interfaces.

It’s a shame that the marketing image of the face is a scam. 240×280 is incapable of reproducing that image at that fidelity. It’s a composite image with some vector art for the case and a cropped shot from some other product’s marketing. That mars what is probably otherwise a good maker product.

I’d appreciate more journalistic integrity in reporting these things, please. Ie when something is obvious to the reviewer that it is a marketing image, not a product image, then please flag it as such, to protect your readership from what you are promoting.

It’s actually not certain. The one on the photo is ~307×360, which is not far from this. Once resized to 240×280 it’s almost the same.

I have an Amazfit GT4 Mini smartwatch with a 336 x 384 1.65-inch AMOLED display (a bit higher resolution).

This is what it looks like. I took the photos with my smartphone and it’s a bit blurry, but I think we can get the idea…

I’m also not convinced the image above has been photoshopped.

As I said, it’s a composite. I’m not in a habit of making baseless claims. Load it in Gimp. Select the Colours menu, then the Curves tool. Drag the middle of the gamma ramp up so you can plainly see the boundaries of the vector (noiseless) image which the photo (noisy) was cropped into. For comparison, apply the same tool to your own real unedited photo. You will see detail in all areas, with a uniformity of noise. I get it when companies do aspirational artwork for Kickstarter and don’t have the real product yet. I’m not criticising that context.… Read more »

This and the 1.28″ version are really cool. I’d like to see a power consumption spec. It would be nice to have more sensors like temperature and a magnetometer. Maybe there can be an add-on board.
