MediaTek has recently announced the MT6572, a dual-core SoC with integrated Wi-Fi, FM, GPS and Bluetooth functions targeted at the entry segment. This SoC, manufactured using 28nm process technology, comes with a dual core cortex A7 processor @ 1.2GHz combined with a Mali-400 GPU and a multi-mode Rel. 8 HSPA+/TD-SCDMA modem.
Other characteristics include support for up to HD 720p video playback and recording, 5MP camera, and up to qHD (960×540) displays.
One of the first smartphones based on the platform will be Sunspan D28X and D26X with 4.5″ display, 5MP camera, and running Android 4.2 version of the system. Both devices will come with 1600 mAh battery., and both will cater for the Chinese market with D28X supporting TD-SCDMA (China Mobile), and D26X W-CDMA (Unicom).
MediaTek claims MT6572 can be expected in hundreds of commercial models which will sell in June and beyond. MT6582, the quad core version, is expected in Q3 2013.

Oh this is good news indeed. For one I don’t really need a quad core anyway and second the Mali is interesting as it’s a shift from PowerVr.
What I don’t really understand is why there’s a need for a quad core MT6582 ? Don’t they already have a quad core, the MT6589 ? Will this be a lower cost quad core ?
Too about about the screen resolution limit, it’s kind of low but should be enough I guess.
Cant this chipset play 1080p vídeo?
Any linux sources published yet?
@pepe
720p only
@zoobab
Devices are not available for sale yet, so it’s not available, and usually it’s pretty hard to get the source.
I found a MT6575 kernel (Philips W732): https://github.com/Demeterp/w732_kernel_src via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974434&page=2
If large companies use MT6572, then we may get a better chance.

Hi.
Is that source legal? It seems some codes is encumbered with NDA from MediaTek.
@noname
I’m never sure about that. After browsing on XDA, there seems to have been several incomplete release, but the one above is said to build at least.
All Mediatek code I’ve seen contains all kinds of notices and NDAs and such in the headers. The fact is that it’s released under the GPL and that given the fact that it links to previously existing GPL code it’s GPL code whatever MediaTek says in its headers. If Mediatek doesn’t agree they can always sue and loose 🙂
A phone using this:

but is there any point having dual core with only 256MB RAM???
@onebir
I wonder how Android 4.2 runs with 256 MB RAM, and with 512MB flash, you won’t much space to install anything.
Could it be safe to assume it’s a fake Android 4.2?
@pepe
Cant
Where from can I order a devkit or evaluation board for MT6572 chipset ?
@Bharat Biswal
You can try to contact Mediatek in your country – http://www.mediatek.com/_en/08_info/04_worldwide.php
If you work for a small company they probably won’t work with you…
