Variscite VAR-SOM-AM62P SoM features Texas Instruments Sitara AM62P5 SoC for cost-effective multimedia applications

Variscite VAR-SOM-AM62P is a system-on-module powered by Texas Instruments Sitara AM62P5 quad-core Cortex-A53 + Cortex-R5F SoC coupled with up to 8GB LPDDR4 RAM and 128GB eMMC flash, and designed for cost-effective multimedia applications.

The SO-DIMM module offers high speed interfaces such as gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0, a certified WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4 module, and operating in the -40 to 85°C industrial range. As a VAR-SOM module, it’s pin-to-pin compatible with other modules from the family such as the VAR-SOM-6UL or VAR-SOM-IMX93.

Variscite VAR SOM AM62P system on module back

TI AM62P5 SoM block diagram
Block diagram

The VAR-SOM-AM62P is very similar to the VAR-SOM-AM62 we covered in 2023, but the AM62P5 SoC replaces the 400 MHz Cortex-M4 MCU core found in the AM6252/AM6254, by a more powerful  800 MHz Cortex-R5F real-time core. There’s no PRU anymore, but a H.264/H.264/VP9 VPU is added which should prove handy for multimedia applications.

Variscite provides Linux support via Debian and the Yocto Project, as well as an Android BSP. As a side note, the AMP62P5 SoC was upstreamed since Linux 6.6 LTS. There’s no development kit on the product page, but the company shared a photo of the VAR-SOM-AM62P devkit with us. Unsurprisingly, it looks to be based on the same Symphony carrier board as for the VAR-SOM-AM62, and other VAR-SOM modules, and includes a touchscreen display.

VAR SOM AM62P development kitVariscite has yet to provide pricing information for the VAR-SOM-AM62P, but for reference, the earlier VAR-SOM-AM62 starts at $33. Additional information may be found on the product page and the press release. Embedded World 2025 is coming to a close, but for reference, the company demonstrates the new AM62P5 system-on-module at booth 4A-342.
