SONOFF SNZB-06P Zigbee human presence sensor is based on a 5.8GHz microwave radar

ITEAD has launched a new Zigbee sensor with the SONOFF SNZB-06P designed to detect human presence using a 5.8GHz microwave radar whose main advantage over a traditional PIR motion sensor is the ability to detect stationary persons since this type of sensor can detect breathing.

You’ll need a Zigbee Hub from SONOFF such as the NSPanel Pro or SONOFF iHost, or from other manufacturers, for instance, the Amazon Echo Plus 2nd generation, or simply use a Zigbee USB dongle such as the SONOFF ZBDongle-E connected to a host like a Raspberry Pi. Configuration and control is done through the usual eWelink app for Android or iOS.

SONOFF SNZB-06B human presence detection sensor

SONOFF SNZB-06P specifications:

  • MCU – Silicon Labs EFR32MG22 wireless microcontroller
  • Human presence sensor
    • 5.8GHz microwave radar
    • Sensitivity configurable from 2.5 meters to 4 meters
  • Wireless – Zigbee 3.0 (router type) up to 30 meters
  • Misc – Red LED, magnetic base, button
  • Power Supply – 5V DC/1A via USB Type-C port
  • Dimensions – 44.2 x 44.2 x 59mm
  • Weight – 31 grams
  • Temperature Range – -10°C to 60°C
  • Humidity – 0 to 90%RH, non-condensing
  • Materials – ABS+PC
  • Certifications – CE/FCC/ISED/RoHS
  • Safety standard – EN IEC 62368-1

SONOFF SNZB-06B mounting optionsMounting can be done with the built-in magnet, the provided 3M adhesive, or a screw mount. The kit also comes with cable clips for neater cable management. It’s probably consuming more than PIR motion since it does not come with a battery and needs to be powered by a USB cable, but if you sit while using your laptop or lie down while reading a book, it won’t suddenly turn off the lights if no motion is detected since natural breathing is enough. But note that It won’t work as well as a more expensive AI solution, as the SNZB-06P will also detect movement from pets, curtains, smart vacuum cleaners, and working fans.

Once the initial configuration is complete with the eWelink app, you can set up the sensor to work with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung Smartthings, Yandex Alice, IFTTT, or Home Assistant open-source home automation framework.

ITEAD is taking pre-orders for the SNZB-06P Zigbee human presence detection sensor for $14.90 with shipping scheduled for mid-November. As usual, you can also get a 10% discount with the coupon CNXSOFTSONOFF.

Looks nice, only the cable position is weird, it should just come from the back so it could be hidden, i can’t imagine anybody want to mount it like they show in the last picture.

In a similar vein there’s the Seeed Studio mmWave Human Detection Sensor Kit which is ESP32C3-based so provides WiFi/BLE and can be customized with different types of mmWave detectors. A comparison of the two would be interesting (especially if/how the 5.8 GHz vs 24 GHz band makes a difference).
