ESP32 OpenMQTTGateway smart plug acts as an BLE MQTT gateway and a power meter

The Theengs Plug ESP32 smart plug runs OpenMQTTGateway firmware to serve as a BLE MQTT gateway and power meter compatible with Home Assistant, Homebridge, OpenHAB, DomoticZ, FHEM, Jeedom, NodeRed, AWS, and any MQTT-compatible IoT or Smart Home system.

While the Matter standard should improve interoperability between Smart Home frameworks over time, there are still millions of devices already produced that are not Matter compatible, and the Theengs Plug aims to at least partially address this issue by helping users reduce the number of hubs required and have only one that supports different ecosystems.

Theengs Plug ESP32 OpenMQTTGateway

Some of the use cases for the Theengs Plug, and other ESP32 board loads with OpenMQTTGateway, plus an appropriate BLE sensor and an MQTT broker include plant monitoring, temperature and humidity monitoring for cigar box, fridge, room, cooking (BBQ)…, the measurement of CO2, particle matter and formaldehyde levels in your home, monitoring water and energy usage when showering, and so on.

More than 70 sensors are supported by OpenMQTTGateway firmware, and as we’ve reported previously Theengs provides a range of open-source BLE tools to go along with the firmware. The developer also highlights some extra benefits such as support for Home Assistant auto discovery convention, OTA updates, low power mode, SSL support, and more. You’ll also find some documentation to get started with the Theengs Plug.

You can also flash OpenMQTTGateway on other ESP32, ESP8266, or Arduino boards, or install the Python-based Theengs Gateway on a Raspberry Pi SBC, but purchasing the Theengs Plug will be easier and also supports the project. The US version of the OpenMQTTGateway smart plug is now sold for $39.90 in the US, but we are told support for other regions is planned, and a European smart plug will be designed.

Is this like selling old stock with a custom Firmware and double the price?
Also 2023 and still fiddling with mqtt? More perfomant and efficent protocols exist already which doesn’t require setup or debugging…

For example?

Like something which is designed for high speed networks (unlike mqtt) we have today in our homes.

Could for example install esphome on such a plug (with power metering and bluetooth proxy) and connect it via native api to Home Assistant.
