Snapdragon X70 5G modem leverages “AI” to reach 10 Gbps

Snapdragon X70 5G AI modem

Qualcomm has announced their latest 5G modem with the Snapdragon X70 that is said to “uses the power of AI” to enable 5G speeds up to 10 Gbps, wider coverage, low latency, and higher power efficiency.

The company explains the Qualcomm 5G AI Suite enables AI-powered optimizations of sub-6 GHz and mmWave 5G links on the Snapdragon X70 through various techniques:

  • AI-based channel-state feedback and dynamic optimization
  • AI-based mmWave beam management for superior mobility and coverage robustness
  • AI-based network selection for superior mobility and link robustness
  • AI-based adaptive antenna tuning for up to 30% improved context detection for higher average speeds and coverage

That’s about all the details we have about the “artificial intelligence” part, and I’m not convinced neural networks are actually used here. For reference, the previous generation Snapdragon X65 was also sold as a 10Gbps 5G modem, but maybe Snapdragon X70 can achieve high speeds more reliably.

Other highlights of the Snapdragon X70 5G modem include:

  • Support every commercial 5G band from 600 MHz to 41 GHz
  • 4x downlink carrier aggregation across TDD and FDD, mmWave-sub-6 aggregation
  • Standalone mmWave support to allow MNOs and service providers to deploy services such as fixed wireless access and enterprise 5G, without needing sub-6 GHz spectrum
  • Uplink carrier aggregation and switched uplink support across TDD and FDD
  • Peak Speeds – Download: 10 Gbps; Upload: 3.5 Gbps
  • True global 5G multi-SIM including Dual-SIM Dual-Active (DSDA) and mmWave support
  • Upgradeable architecture allowing support for upcoming 5G Release 16 features through software updates. Qualcomm claims the update should provide up to 60% improved power efficiency
  • 4nm baseband process

Snapdragon X70 samples are expected in H2 2022, while commercial mobile devices equipped with the 5G modem are expected by the end of the year. Additional information may be found in the press release and product page.

Uhm… Network selection, beam management and carrier aggregation is not handled client side, so I’m not sure a how they can claim modem can “use the power of AI”…

From Qualcomm’s site:

The underlying enabling capability is radio awareness, which provides useful knowledge through environmental and contextual sensing that can reduce overheads and latency. Through radio awareness, the 5G system can support:

Enhanced device experiences like more intelligent beam forming and power management

Improved system performance like reduced interference and better spectrum utilization

Better radio security like better detection and protection against malicious attacks

Ah ah ah ah I guess it’s time to find another buzzword when radio modems claim to rely on AI to code/decode signals 🙂 Marketing people are really fantastic, they’re the only ones not figuring that the whole world is laughing at them!
