As we all know, 2G and 3G cellular networks are gradually being sunset, and NB-IoT has been formally incorporated into 3GPP standards. The LPWAN industry has ushered in new development opportunities for the Internet of Things market.
Ai-Thinker has recently released three NB-IoT series modules: EC-01/EC-01F/EC-01G. The NB-IoT series modules are equipped with the EC616S chip platform, which is an ultra-low-cost, ultra-low power, ultra-high integration NB-IoT SOC chip, fully supporting the 3GPP R13/R14 NB-IoT standards with up to 159 kbps uplink.
What are the benefits of the new modules?
- Better signal, more spectrum
- Better performance (equipped with EC616S)
- Ultra-low power consumption, stable and reliable connectivity
- I/O expansion, feature-rich module
Check out the comparison table between AI Thinker NB-IoT modules part of the EC-01 family below.
Ai-Thinker NB-IoT series modules adopt an SMD package that is convenient for mass production at the factory, and can use AOI to do the SMT process control, and reduce the production defect rate.
Ai-Thinker NB-IoT series modules are mainly used in wireless meter reading, intelligent smoke sensors, intelligent street lamps, intelligent logistics, asset tracking, intelligent parking, and other practical application scenarios of the Internet of Things.

I have 2 questions,
In short, we would like to extend the support in zephyr RTOS and use the module in place of nrf91 or SIM07080G in our existing product. Thanks in advance.
The module is factory-equipped with the AT command firmware.
is the module re-programmable?
is it possible to replace the existing firmware with a custom firmware?
1. You can get development board samples from Ai-Thinker:https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Ai-Thinker-NEW-Product-EC-01F_10000005641035.html?spm=a2747.manage.0.0.5a3e71d2vaOcyD
2.freeRTOS
Yeah, but I do not consider 100 pcs minimum order to be selling “samples”.
There is a thing that I don’t understand about NB-IOT.
Does it require a special SIM? I’ve tried with all the major local carriers and none get signal.
I’m using a sim7020e that have the same footprint of the sim800. If I use the sim800 (on same PCB) I get the signal and I can send data/sms/calls. With the NBIOT I got aboslutly nothing.
is normal SIM card BUT with APN enabled for NB/CAT
operators do not want to pay for NB/CAT licenses and
therefore do not provide the service en masse
Hi dear, Yes it require a IoT SIM card but not actually the same as the SIM card use in the phone. Pls contact [email protected] to get more informations about this module.
Lol there smart metering example looks so advanced :p
